(St. George, Utah – Oct. 14, 2023) - Behind five Trailblazers with six or more kills, the Utah Tech volleyball team swept Seattle on Saturday afternoon at Burns Arena.
The Trailblazers (7-11, 3-5 WAC), who completed their third sweep of the season, topped Seattle (6-13, 1-7 WAC) winning sets, 25-23, 25-19, 25-14.
Led by nine kills apiece from
Kennedi Knudsen and
Sydney Reese, the Blazers also got eight kills from
Taylor Snow and six apiece from
Kate Hardy and
Hannah Howard.
Emma Ricks tallied a team-leading 13 digs and the duo of
Marley Roe and
Meg Carter nearly evenly split assists with 17 and 16, respectively.
Utah Tech got the opening set started with a 13-8 lead after a 3-0 run and continued to lead by five (16-11) before four straight points for the Redhawks brought the visitors within one at 16-15.
A kill by Howard kept UT ahead 20-18, but Seattle again battled back to tie the set at 20, 21, 22 & 23. Another kill by Howard and an attack error by SU gave the Blazers a narrow two-point set win.
Getting out to another early lead in the second set, UT led 13-11 before using a 6-1 run to push ahead 19-12 after a kill by Howard. Seattle briefly cut the Blazers' lead to four at 23-19, but the final two points of the set went to Utah Tech after a kill by Knudsen and an attack error.
Looking to complete the sweep and take care of business in the third set, the Trailblazers did just that going on an 8-1 run to turn a 5-4 deficit to a 12-6 advantage after an
Adee Butler kill. A 6-0 run for the Blazers later in the set extended Utah Tech's lead to double digits at 19-9 and a kill by Snow closed out the match for a dominant win in the third set.
The Trailblazers held an edge over the Redhawks in kills (42-29), service aces (7-4), assists (39-28) and digs (42-33).
Utah Tech stays at home next weekend to host Stephen F. Austin (19-3, 8-0 WAC) on Thursday and UT Arlington (15-6, 4-4 WAC) on Saturday at Burns Arena.
