Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Trailblazer comeback falls short against Seattle U in 70-66 loss

Utah Tech women's basketball fell short in a 70-66 home loss to the Seattle U Redhawks on Saturday afternoon.

What Head Coach JD Gustin said: "Seattle came in loose and confident and played with nothing to lose. Our team did not and it cost us. I am pleased with the way we competed in the 4th [quarter] and thought the game was played at a relatively high-level in that quarter.  Ultimately, we have to credit Seattle as I thought they were very good today."

How it happened: The first quarter of play was a back and forth battle from both sides. Matching both makes and misses, the teams never were separated by more than five points. After the first quarter the game was level at 18 apiece.

In the second quarter the Redhawks started pulling away with a lead. Starting off hot with a three-pointer off, Seattle U went on a 9-0 run to start the quarter. The Trailblazers were able to draw it close within five again after two back-to-back lay-ins from Taylia Stimpson, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit.

At the halftime break UT was down 19-12.

In the third quarter the Redhawks extended their lead to a game-high 11, but then a pair of three-pointers from Emily Isaascson and Amber Kartchner brought the game within two possessions again. From there, the Trailblazers were able to bring the game within 7 points again to end the third quarter and started fighting for a fourth-quarter comeback.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Blazers fought the deficit back to four points off an Isaacson three. After her three, though, the Trailblazers went nearly seven minutes without a field goal, their only points coming from two pairs of free throws from Averi Papa and Breaunna Gillen.

Despite drawing the game back close, the Trailblazers were unable to finish the comeback against the Redhawks and dropped a 70-66 result inside Burns Arena.

Leaders: Utah Tech was led by Emily Isaacson who posted 17 points and had five rebounds.

Averi Papa led the team in rebounds with seven. Papa paired that with nine points and two blocks.

Gillen led the team in assists with five, adding to her total as the all-time assist leader in Utah Tech history.

Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 39 percent from the field, 31 percent from the three and 75 percent from the free throw line. UT totaled 32 rebounds, 13 assists, 10 steals and 17 turnovers.

Seattle U shot 49 percent from the field, 36 percent from the three and 66 percent from the free throw line. The Redhawks totaled 33 rebounds, 16 assists, nine steals and 16 turnovers.

Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 13-7 on the season and 5-4 in conference play.

Next Up: Utah Tech will return to Texas where they will have a pair of games with UTRGV and UT Arlington on Feb. 2 and 4, respectively. The Trailblazers will then return home for a three-game homestand with NM State, Stephen F. Austin and UTRGV.
