Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

WSOC extends undefeated streak to eight with 2-1 win over Abilene Christian

Utah Tech women's soccer continued its eight game undefeated streak through game four of conference play with a 2-1 win over the Abilene Christian Wildcats.

WHAT HEAD COACH MOLLY ROUSE SAID: "It was another challenging WAC match. ACU was organized defensively and dangerous in their attack. It was encouraging to see our team create quality chances in the run of play that we were able to capitalize on. We managed the game well enough to hold on to the result as ACU pushed to equalize. This was a good away trip that allowed us the opportunity to address new game situations. As our program continues to strive for consistency, we welcome the challenges these weekends will present. We are excited to utilize this momentum heading into another tough game against SUU on Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Utah Tech came out the aggressors in this match. After Abilene Christian had a draw at home in their last match, Utah Tech knew high intensity from the opening whistle was going to help them get out on the front foot in this match.

Just three minutes into the game, Emily Garbett found herself in on goal but her shot went off the crossbar, an attempt that started a flurry of attacks from the Trailblazers.

After controlling possession for the opening quarter hour of play, the Trailblazers were able to put away a goal. It started with Brynlee Roberts sending a ball into the box that was punched out by the Abilene goalkeeper. The ball spilled to the feet of Karli Nyland who took a touch that ricocheted off an Abilene defender who tried to control the ball but it rolled to the feet of an onrushing Lauren Buxton. Buxton one-timed the shot with her right foot just inside the far post for her third goal of the season.

The Trailblazers were able to find three more shots in the first half, but none found the back of the net as they headed to the halftime break up 1-0.

Out of the halftime break, the Wildcats came out and were able to get one in the back of the net. The Wildcats swung in a ball from beyond the 18-yard box that snuck into the upper corner of the net past Kayla Thompson for the equalizer.

After conceding the goal the Trailblazers went back on the attack and tried to press the Wildcat backline. It took the team less than 10 minutes to recover from the Wildcats goal and reclaim the lead. A corner kick from Garbett found the head of Emma Carver who headed the ball down into the ground. Carver's header found the feet of Abigail Allard who toe poked the ball into the underside of the crossbar, just enough to push it in the back of the net.

Utah Tech worked to preserve their lead through the final half hour of play. The Wildcats had a handful of chances through the second half but the Trailblazer defense held strong against their pressure.

The Trailblazers ended the match with the 2-1 win for their eighth straight match undefeated, going 7-0-1 since Aug. 29.

STAT BREAKDOWN:  In total Utah Tech had five shots with two shots on frame. Buxton and Allard had goals on the night as well as Ella Carmody, Kalea Woodyatt and Emily Garbett registered a shot apiece.

Kayla Thompson started in goal and played the full 90 for UT and ended the game with three saves.

Abilene ended the game with nine shots with four on frame. ACU's goalkeeper ended the match with zero saves.

NOTES TO KNOW: Utah Tech now has a 7-2-1 record overall on the season. The Trailblazers are on a seven game winning streak and undefeated in conference play through the opening four games.

UP NEXT: Utah Tech will return head back out on the road next week for a trip up I-15 to in-state rival Southern Utah on Sunday, Oct. 2. After that the Trailblazers will return home for matches against Sam Houston and New Mexico state.
