Dixie State downs Southern Utah 10-2 in five innings

Dixie State softball dominated in-state rival Southern Utah on Tuesday afternoon with a 10-2 win in five innings.

What head coach Randy Simkins said: "Very happy with the way we played today.  Because of the rivalry between our two schools, SUU will always be a tough team to play.  Playing them on the last game on their home field probably gave them some extra motivation.  We got a very good outing from Kate on the mound. She was effective in limiting base runners and not allowing SUU to generate much momentum offensively.  Also, extremely pleased with our hitters today.  We had at least one hit or RBI from everyone in the lineup today.  We strung together very good at bats and really put pressure on their pitchers and defense.  Good win to get as we head into our last WAC home series this weekend against Seattle U."

How it happened: In the second inning the Trailblazers put up two runs from two hits and two errors to take an early lead. In the bottom of the third SUU tried to answer with one run on the board. After three complete innings, DSU had a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Lauren Almeida started the inning off with a homer over the right field fence. Rachel Campbell followed that up with a homer over left center. Southern Utah was able to get one run off one hit in the bottom of the fourth and at the end of four complete DSU had a 4-2 lead.

Dixie State went off in the fifth inning to become untouchable. Shea Clements and Laura Lockard started things off with a pair of singles. Almeida then singled for an RBI.

Later with one runner on, Campbell connected for a bomb to right field. Her second of the game for two RBIs. At this point, DSU had an 8-2 lead with just one out in the inning. Marisa Rubio then doubled and was set in scoring position for Phoebe Schultz who singled to right field for the RBI.

The Trailblazers were able to get two more runs in the inning to take a 10-2 lead. Southern Utah went three up and three down at the plate in the bottom of the fifth to give Dixie the win after five complete innings.

At the plate: Dixie ended the game with 10 runs off 14 hits with 10 RBI. Dixie State drew one walk and had just one strikeout on the day. Campbell led the Trailblazers going 3-3 from the plate with two runs, three RBIs and two home runs. Almeida also went 3-3 at the plate with three runs and two RBIs with one homer.

In the circle: Kate Dolinski started in the circle and pitched a complete 5.0 innings. She gave up just three hits and two runs. She did record two strikeouts on the day.

Notes to Know: Dixie State is now 19-29 overall on the season and remain 8-13 in WAC play. Campbell is the second Trailblazer this season to hit two homeruns in one game.

Up Next: The Trailblazers will host Seattle in the final three games of the season. Dixie State will honor two seniors in Carissa Burgess and Kasey Crawford on Saturday, May 7 for senior day.
