DSU falls short in 6-5 loss to CBU

Dixie State softball fell just short in the final game of the three game series with California Baptist Saturday evening with a final score of 6-5. 

How it happened: The Lancers were the first to get on the scoreboard. They put up three runs from three hits to take a 3-0 lead.  In the top of the second, Phoebe Schultz doubled down the left field line for an RBI to put Dixie State on the board. 

CBU was able to get a single run from two hits in the bottom of the second to maintain their three run lead. The third and fourth innings went scoreless for both teams but DSU found an offensive spark in the top of the fifth. 

Lauren Almeida started the inning off with a double to center field. Schultz drew a walk and Dixie had two runners in scoring position. Hannah Hughbanks then doubled for an RBI. 

Later in the inning, with two runners in scoring position, Rachel Campbell doubled to left center for two RBI before the top half of the inning ended. In the fifth, DSU put up four runs from three hits to take a 5-4 lead. 

CBU came up with two runs to take back the lead for a 6-5 score going into the final inning of play. DSU couldn't get into scoring position in the top of the seventh and fell 6-5. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with five runs from six hits with five RBI.  The Blazers were led by Hughbanks who went 2-4 with one run and one RBI. 

In the circle: Tyler Denhart pitched a complete six inning shutout. She gave up six runs, six hits and two walks but she did come away with two strikeouts. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State now sits at 13-24 overall on the season and is 3-9 in WAC play. 

Up Next: Dixie State will stay on the road to take on in-state rival BYU on Tuesday, April 12 before returning home to host New Mexico State on April 15-16.
