Game Recap: Softball |

Dixie State dominates in double header with NM State

Dixie State softball dominated New Mexico State in a double header Friday putting up a combined total of 27 runs to come away with the double header sweep on the day.

GAME ONE
How it happened: Dixie State wasted no time taking control of the game. In the bottom of the first, Kasey Crawford started things with a single up the middle. Hannah Hughbanks followed in suit with a single putting two runners on base.

Shea Clements then got up and hit one deep over the fence in between the left field foul pole and a palm tree for 3 RBI.

With a 3-0 lead, DSU didn't let up the pace. In the second inning, Dixie State batted around the entire lineup with all nine batters crossing the plate for a run. Carly Eldredge singled for an RBI before Crawford homered for 3 more runs.

The Trailblazers loaded up the bases and Oaklee Trapp then hit an absolute bomb for a grand slam. Before the second inning closed out, DSU was able to put up seven more runs to take a 14-0 lead.

NMSU was able to get one run off of two hits in the top of the third and later scored a single run in the fifth inning but the damage had been done and Dixie State walked out with a 14-2 win over NM State.

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with 14 runs from 11 hits with 13 RBI.  The Blazers had two doubles and three home runs. DSU drew seven walks and successfully stole two bases.

DSU was led by Crawford who went 2-3 at the plate with two runs and three RBI. There were two other Trailblazers who recorded two hits in Hughbanks and Marisa Rubio. Rubio went 2-2 at the plate and scored two runs.

In the circle: Tyler Denhart pitched 3.0 innings. She gave up four hits and one run. She had one strikeout and recorded the win boosting her record to 5-7 on the season.

Carissa Burgess finished out the game pitching two innings and gave up four hits and one run. She came away with two strikeouts on the game.

Notes to Know: Clements leads the team in homers and now has nine on the season. Crawford now has four on the season. Trapp's grand slam was the first one DSU has had this season.

GAME TWO
How it happened: The Trailblazers were first to get on the board in Game Two. In the bottom of the second inning, Dixie had two runners on base and Laura Lockard doubled to right center for two RBI.

Later in the bottom of the third inning, Dixie put up one run from two hits to give the Trailblazers a 3-0 score after three complete innings.

In the top of the fourth, NMSU put up two runs to cut the score deficit to just one run.

Rachel Campbell came away with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth to give DSU a little more cushion going into the final two innings of play.

In the top of the sixth, the Aggies put up three runs from two hits to take a 5-4 lead. With two outs and bases loaded, Carissa Burgess won a battle in the circle for DSU. She ended up fighting in an eight pitch at bat and finally came away with the K to end the inning getting Dixie out of a sticky situation.

The Trailblazers weren't phased at all as they popped off for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.

To start the bottom of sixth off, DSU put two runners in scoring position and thanks to a throwing error by the Aggies short stop, Dixie tied the game at 5-5. Kasey Crawford and Hannah Hughbanks hit back-to-back doubles for three RBI. Later in the inning, Lockard pounded one over the left field fence for three RBI. With two outs, DSU had a 12-5 lead over New Mexico State.
