Dixie State shuts out UNLV in 8-0 victory

Dixie State softball gave up just five hits in a big 8-0 shutout win over University of Nevada Las Vegas Tuesday evening.

What head coach Randy Simkins said: "We played very well in all three areas, pitching, fielding and hitting!  Kate pitched a gem and we backed her up with some great defensive plays.  We had a goal to get into their bullpen and we swung it well enough to get that done.  A quality win against a very good UNLV team! Very proud of our team tonight."

How it happened:  Dixie State started things off in the bottom of the first inning. Marisa Rubio started things off with a high hopper to the shortstop. Rubio out ran the throw for a hit to get on base. She then stole second moving her into scoring position for Shea Clements. Clements hit a gap in the right side for an RBI.

After just the first inning, DSU had the 1-0 edge. The second inning went scoreless for both teams. In the top of the third inning, UNLV had two runners in scoring position with just one out. Kate Dolinski was up in the count for the next two batters who each hit grounders for a 5-3 putout and a 6-3 putout to end the inning, leaving the Rebels with a goose egg on the board.

In the bottom of the third inning the Blazers found some fire. Rubio started things off with another single. Hannah Hughbanks then hit one hard that bounced off the third baseman's glove for a single. Laura Lockard drew a walk and just like that DSU had the bases loaded.

Oaklee Trapp stepped up and sent one off the center field fence for a bases clearing double, racking up three RBI.

In the top of the fourth, the Rebels placed two runners in scoring position yet again with no outs. The Trailblazers knocked down the next three batters to keep the Rebels at bay.

Bottom of the fifth inning, Kasey Crawford started things off with a shot through the right side. Carly Eldredge followed in suit with a bunt to third but was able to outrun it for a hit. Rubio then laid down a sac bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. Hughbanks gave up a sac fly for an RBI.

With a runner in scoring position and two outs Clements knocked one deep into center field for a single and an RBI. One runner on base, two outs, Laura Lockard smashes a first pitch deep over the center field fence for two RBI. As the fourth inning ended, DSU had the 8-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth the Rebels fought for a chance to keep the game alive by getting a runner on third. Dixie's defense locked in and put away two more outs to end the game early in five.

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with 10 hits from 22 at bats with eight runs and eight RBI.  DSU recorded one double and one homerun. The Blazers were led by Rubio, Clements and Trapp who each notched two hits a piece.
