Game Recap: Softball |

Dixie State falls 7-5 to GCU

Dixie State softball fell 7-5 to Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon in the final game of the three game series.

How it happened: Grand Canyon didn't waste much time getting a jump on the Trailblazers. In the first inning GCU got three runs from four hits and in the second inning put up one run to take a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Dixie State had a big inning. Hannah Hughbanks started things off with a solo shot down the right field line. Shea Clements and Laura Lockard followed that up with singles to put two runners on base. Lauren Almeida then smashed the ball over the left field fence for three RBIs to tie the game up at 4-4.

In the bottom of the fourth, GCU was able to get three more runs to push for a 7-4 lead after four complete.

The fifth and sixth innings went scoreless for both teams. In the top of the seventh, Madisen Duryea hit a solo home run to try and ignite some offensive momentum but the Trailblazers couldn't finish and fell with a final score of 7-5.

At the plate: Dixie ended the game with five runs off 10 hits. Duryea led DSU going 2-3 at the plate with one homer, one double, one run scored and one RBI. Clements was also the top of the leaderboard going 3-4 at the plate with one run.

In the circle: Tyler Denhart started in the circle and pitched 3.1 innings. She gave up eight hits, seven runs and one walk.

Carissa Burgess closed out the game and pitched 2.2 innings. She gave up just one hit and came away with two strikeouts.

Notes to Know: Dixie State is now 18-29 overall on the season and 8-13 in WAC play.

Up Next: The Trailblazers will next head to Southern Utah for a mid-week in-state rivalry game Tuesday, May 3 before hosting Seattle in the final three games of the season. Dixie State will honor two seniors in Carissa Burgess and Kasey Crawford on Saturday, May 7 for senior day.
