Trailblazers sweep Friday DH at WAC leader Grand Canyon

DSU hands GCU its first WAC doubleheader defeat of the year

Dixie State softball opened its three-game Western Athletic Conference series at league-leading Grand Canyon in winning style on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader, 4-2 and 11-2, from the Lopes at the GCU Softball Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Trailblazers (18-28, 8-12 WAC) pounded out 20 hits on the day, while Tyler Denhart and Carissa Burgess each tallied a complete-game victory in the circle. Meanwhile,  Dixie State handed Grand Canyon (33-12, 16-4 WAC) just its second and third WAC home losses of the season and its first WAC doubleheader defeat of the year.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 4, Grand Canyon 2

The Trailblazers and Lopes played through three scoreless innings in the series opener, as both sides placed multiple runners on base but could not score, combining for nine runners left on base through the first three frames.

Dixie State broke through in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits to break the scoreless draw. Ellie Evans checked in as pinch runner after Oaklee Trapp drew a leadoff walk, then scored the first run of the game on an RBI-groundout by Kasey Crawford. Hannah Hughbanks extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI-single up the middle, plating Marissa Rubio from third. After a single to left field earlier in the frame, Carly Eldredge tallied the final run, scoring before Hughbanks was tagged in a rundown between first and second.

Grand Canyon answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1, but DSU retired the next three GCU batters to end the inning.

The Trailblazers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, turning two hits and a GCU miscue into a 4-1 advantage. After Shea Clements reached on a GCU error, Laura Lockard moved her to third with a single to left center. Rachel Campbell belted the next pitch to right field to bring Clements home and push the lead to three runs.

The Lopes cut the lead to 4-2 with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but would get no closer as Lauren Almeida fielded a ground ball at shortstop and stepped on second base for the force out to seal the victory.

Lockard led DSU at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and RBI, while Eldredge and Hughbanks each tallied multi-hit performances. Denhart tossed her eighth complete game of the year, striking out five GCU batters en route to her seventh win of the season.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 11, Grand Canyon 2 (6 innings)

Dixie State struck first in the top of the second, turning three hits into a 2-0 advantage. Lockard opened the frame with a leadoff single up the middle, then moved to third when Trapp doubled to right center field. Both runners scored when Madisen Duryea belted a two-run double into the same right-center gap.

The Trailblazers blew the game open in the top of the third, scoring six runs on three hits and two GCU errors. DSU loaded the bases after a Crawford walk, followed by back-to-back singles by Hughbanks and Clements.

Crawford would score the first when Lockard drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by Hughbanks, who crossed the plate after the GCU catcher dropped a throw home for a potential force out. Clements later scored when a pickoff attempt from home to third sailed into left field. With two runners still on base, Duryea ripped the first pitch of her second-at bat over the wall in left field for her first colliegate home run, pushing the lead to 8-0 in the process.

Grand Canyon used a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third and an RBI double in the fifth to trim the lead to 8-2. But the Lopes wouldn't get any closer.

DSU wrapped up the game and the doubleheader sweep in the sixth inning. Clements crushed a towering three-run home run to center field in the top half of the frame to push the lead to 11-2. The Blazer defense then sealed the run-rule victory, turning a double play to earn the win in style.

Clements and Hughbanks both recorded three hits to lead Dixie State at the plate, while Duryea added two hits to go with a career-high 5 RBI. Burgess earned her third win of the year in the pitcher's circle with two strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

The Trailblazers and Lopes will close the three-game series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (2 p.m. MDT).
