Late surge falls short in DSU's 8-6 loss to BYU

Dixie State softball surged in the seventh inning but fell short to in-state rival BYU on Tuesday afternoon with a final score of 8-6. 

How it happened: Dixie State was the first to get on the board in the first inning. The Trailblazers put two runners on base and Shea Clements singled through the right side for an RBI. 

The second inning went scoreless for both teams. BYU was able to get on the board in the top of the third inning thanks to a two run homer. After three complete, BYU had a 2-1 lead over Dixie. 

In the top of the fifth inning, BYU hit two home runs for a combined four RBI to take a 6-1 lead over Dixie State. 

Kasey Crawford tried sparking some offensive momentum in the bottom of the sixth by bouncing one off the scoreboard but the Trailblazers couldnt gain any traction and trailed 6-2 going into the final inning of play. 

Top of the seventh, BYU got two runs from three hits to take an 8-2 lead. Dixie State had a solid run in the bottom of the inning to try and capture the win. Laura Lockard and Lauren Almeida each drew walks to start off the inning. Phoebe Schutlz then came in as a pinch and hit a bomb over the left center field fence for three RBI.  Later in the inning, with one runner in scoring position, Hannah Hughbanks singled through the right side for an RBI.  

As the game closed DSU was able to get four runs from three hits in the bottom of the seventh but ended up falling 8-6 to BYU. 

At the plate: Dixie ended the game with six runs off seven hits. Crawford led the Blazers going 2-4 at the plate scoring two runs with one RBI. 

In the circle: Carissa Burgess started in the circle and pitched 4.1 innings. She gave up three runs and four hits. She did strike out two of the Cougars in her time in the circle. 

Kate Dolinski came into the game and pitched 2.2 innings. She gave up eight hits and four runs and ended the game with three strikeouts. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State is now 16-28 overall on the season. 

Up Next: The Trailblazers will hit the road to take on Grand Canyon in a three game WAC series this weekend with a double header on Friday, April 29th and a single game on Saturday April 30th.
