Despite midgame delay, Blazers down Wolverines 7-6

After a three hour lightning delay, Dixie State came away with a clutch 7-6 win over Utah Valley Friday afternoon. 

How it happened: Dixie State was the first to get on the board in the second inning.  Oaklee Trapp started things off with a single up the middle. Laura Lockard then doubled to center field to put runners in scoring position. Madisen Duryea then hit a sac fly to left field for an RBI. Carly Eldredge then singled to center field for an RBI to give DSU the 2-0 lead. 

In the third inning, Hannah Hughbanks singled to start things off. Shea Clements laid down a beautiful sac bunt to advance the runner in scoring position. Lauren Almeida then singled through the left side to notch another run for a 3-0 lead. 

In the midst of the bottom of the third inning, the competition was put on delay for lightning in the area. After three hours the game resumed and Utah Valley came out big putting up four runs from four hits to take a 4-3 lead after three complete. 

In the top of the fifth, Dixie State was able to capitalize on a Utah Valley error to score two runs before Lockard hit one deep over the left field fence for two RBI.  In the bottom of the fifth, Dixie State went three up three down to send the Wolverines back to the dugout scoreless.

As the fifth ended DSU led 7-4. The sixth inning went scoreless for both teams. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Utah Valley hit a two run shot to bring the score to 7-6 with one out. Dixie was able to get one out before Carissa Burgess came away with a big strikeout to end the game in favor of Dixie. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with seven runs from 11 hits with five RBI.  The Blazers had three doubles and one home run. DSU had one walk and just two strikeouts. 

The Blazers were led by Lockard who went 3-3 from the plate with two runs, two rbi, two doubles and one homerun. Hughbanks also recorded three hits going 3-4 at the plate with one run and one double on the day. 

In the circle: Carissa Burgess pitched a complete seven innings for DSU. She gave up seven hits, six runs and three walks. She recorded seven strikeouts for a season high. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State now has a 16-27 overall record and are 5-9 in WAC Action. 

Up Next: The Trailblazers are set to host in-state rival Brigham Young Univeristy before hitting the road to take on Grand Canyon in a three game WAC series April 29-30.
