Blazers drop two in double header with Utah Valley

Dixie State softball got swept Thursday afternoon in a double header with Utah Valley. First, DSU fell 7-6 before falling 14-0 in game two. 

GAME ONE
How it happened: Dixie State got on the board in the first inning. Carly Eldredge started things off with a single. Shea Clements then hit a double for an RBI. UVU matched the score in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up. 

UVU stayed on the attack and put up two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead over DSU. 

Dixie State found offensive momentum in the fourth inning. Lauren Almeida started things off with a single up the middle. Phoebe Schultz and Eldredge followed in suit, each recording singles to load up the bases. Kasey Crawford then singled to right field for 2 RBI. 

With two runners in scoring position and just one out, Hannah Hughbanks singled through the left side for an RBI. Rachel Campbell then followed with another single for an RBI. Utah Valley scored off a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth for one run. As the fourth inning closed out DSU had a narrow 5-4 lead over Utah Valley. 

In the top of the fifth, Oaklee Trapp doubled to put herself in scoring position. She was able to cross the plate thanks to a Wolverine error giving Dixie a 6-4 lead. 

UVU was able to get three consecutive hits worth extra bases early in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. The Wolverines were able to record one more hit for an RBI to take the game with a walk-off single for a final score of 7-6. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with six runs from 14 hits with five RBI.  The Blazers had three doubles, two stolen bases, just two strikeouts and left seven runners on base. 

DSU had five Trailblazers record two hits. Crawford led going 2-2 from the plate with one run and two RBI. 

In the circle: Tyler Denhart started in the circle and pitched 4.0 innings. She gave up eight hits four runs and two walks. She recorded four strikeouts. 

Carissa Burgess closed out the game for DSU and pitched the final 2.2 innings. She gave up four hits and three runs. She had two strikeouts. 

GAME TWO
How it happened: The Wolverines wasted no time getting a jump on the Trailblazers by putting up eight runs in the first inning. 

Dixie State couldn't match that and continued to fall behind as each inning progressed. 

Utah Valley ended the game early in five innings with a final score of 14-0.  

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with just four hits, drew one walk and left three on base. DSU only had one strikeout. Crawford led DSU going 2-2 at the plate.  

In the circle: Attlyn Johnson started the game for DSU and gave up three runs from four hits before Kate Dolinski took over. Dolinski gave up six hits and six runs in 1.1 innings pitched. 

Ashtyn Bauerle closed out the games and pitched 2.2 innings. She gave up four runs and seven hits before the game came to a close. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State is now 15-27 overall on the season and bumps up to 5-12 in WAC action. 

Up Next: The Trailblazers are scheduled to take on the Wolverines in one more game Friday, April 22 depending on the weather forecast.
