Dixie State drops series finale to Seattle U

Dixie State softball closed its three-game Western Athletic Conference series with Seattle U on a sour note on Saturday, dropping a 7-0 decision to the Redhawks at Logan Field in Seattle, Washington.

The Trailblazers (11-22, 2-7 WAC) finished with eight hits in the loss, just two less than Seattle U, but couldn't move their baserunners around to score and left nine runners on base.

After a scoreless first inning, Seattle U (21-14, 7-2 WAC) scored one run in the second inning and added three more in the third to build a 4-0 advantage.

Dixie State looked to answer in the top of the fourth, using back-to-back singles by Shea Clements and Laura Lockard, along with a Redhawk miscue, to load the bases with just one out. But Seattle U worked out of the jam with two consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.

Seattle scored its final three runs of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of three hits and a DSU error to push the score to the final tally of 7-0.

In a near carbon copy of the fourth frame, DSU seemed poised to break through in the top of the seventh when Kasey Crawford and Carly Eldredge singled in consecutive at-bats to put two runners on with only one out. But like the fourth inning, the next two Trailblazer batters were retired to end the inning and clinch the Seattle victory.

Eldredge, Clements, and Crawford finished with two hits apiece to lead DSU at the plate. Three Dixie State pitchers saw time in the circle, while Tyler Denhart (4-6) took the loss after making her ninth start of the season. Denhart posted two strikeouts, while Carissa Burgess and Kate Dolinski also made an appearance.

The Trailblazers will take a break from WAC play to host UNLV on Tuesday before heading to Riverside, California, for a three-game WAC series at California Baptist on Friday and Saturday.
