Dixie State falls 10-9 to NM State

Dixie State softball played catch up with New Mexico State Saturday afternoon and fell just short with a final score of 10-9. 

How it happened: The first inning was action packed. NMSU wasted no time getting on the board thanks to a three run homer. 

Dixie State answered in the bottom of the inning as Carly Eldredge led off with a single to left field. Hannah Hughbanks then smashed one deep over the right field fence for two RBI. 

The top of the second NMSU put up three more runs from four hits to take a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the second, Lauren Almeida hit a bomb into left field for two RBI. Heading into the third inning Dixie State trailed 6-4. 

The Aggies started the top of the third off with a solo shot and went on to score two more runs to bring their  total to nine runs. Dixie State was only able to get one run in the bottom of the third and after three complete the Blazers trailed 9-5. 

NM State went scoreless for the next three innings thanks to a locked in Dixie State defense and a pitching change. In the bottom of the fourth, DSU was able to notch two runs on the scoreboard thanks to a double by Hughbanks. 

Dixie State wasn't able to get any runs across the plate for the next two innings despite ending the fifth inning with bases loaded. Heading into the final inning of play, DSU trailed 9-7. 

In the top of the seventh, the Aggies got one run from two hits to push their lead to 10-7. The Trailblazers made a push in the bottom of the seventh. Shea Clements started things off with a single up the middle. Rachel Campbell then jacked one deep over left field for two RBI. DSU trailed 10-9. DSU was able to get two more runners on base, one in scoring position but couldn't finish as the Aggies executed a third out to end the game

NM State walked away with the 10-9 win over Dixie. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with nine runs from 14 hits with nine RBI.  The Blazers had one double, one triple and three home runs. DSU drew two walks had just one strikeout and left seven runners on base. 

DSU was led by Hughbanks who went 2-4 at the plate with two runs and three RBI. She recorded one double and one homerun. 

In the circle: Tyler Denhart started in the circle and pitched 1.2 innings. She gave up eight hits and six runs. She did walk away with one backwards k on the day. 

Kate Dolinski stepped into the circle and pitched 2.1 innings. She gave up three runs and seven hits but had two strikeouts. 

Carissa Burgess closed out the game for DSU and pitched the final three innings. She gave up just two hits and had three impressive strikeouts with one of them looking. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State is now 15-25 overall on the season and bumps up to 5-10 in WAC action.

Up Next: Dixie State has a week of in-state battles first taking on Southern Utah Tuesday, April 19. DSU will then head to Orem to take on Utah Valley in a three game WAC series April 22-23.
