Trailblazers split final day at the Capital Classic

Dixie State softball split the final day at the Capital Classic. Dixie dropped the first game of the day 7-1 to Sacramento State but ended the tournament with a 6-5 win over UC Davis. 

GAME 1
How it happened:  Sac State was the first to get on board with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Hornets had a runner on base and Carly Eldredge at second base executed a double play to end the inning preventing any more runs from scoring. 

In the top of the third inning, Shea Clements singled to right field for an RBI to put the Trailblazers on the board. Sac State answered with a homer in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead after three complete innings. 

The Hornets came up with two more home runs and four more runs heading into the final inning of play. Dixie wasn't able to get anything moving in the seventh inning and Sac State claimed the win. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with seven hits from 27 at bats with one run and one RBI.  Clements went 2-3 on the day with one RBI and one double. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 18 putouts, eight assists and one error. Hannah Hughbanks led with eight putouts while Eldredge and Laura Lockard each had four assists. 

In the circle: Tyler Denhart pitched five innings for DSU. She gave up eight hits, five runs and just one walk. She had one strikeout.

Ashtyn Bauerle pitched one inning and gave up two hits, two runs and just one walk. She came away with one strikeout.  

GAME TWO
How it happened: The first inning was action packed with UC Davis hitting a two run shot in the top of the inning and Dixie State answering with a single run from one hit and one error. 

In the top of the second inning the Trailblazers defense dialed in with a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. In the bottom of two, Phoebe Schultz drew a walk to start things off and later advanced into scoring position. Marissa Rubio then singled up the middle for an RBI to tie the game up at 2-2. 

The third inning went scoreless for both teams. However, UC Davis was able to get two runs from four hits and two errors. 

In the bottom of the fifth, DSU had a big inning. With two runners on base, Hughbanks hit one to  left field for an error and an RBI. With bases loaded, Lauren Almeda doubled to left center for two RBIs before the inning ended. 

After five complete innings, DSU had 5-4 lead. In the top of the sixth, the Aggies tied things up at 5-5 thanks to one run from three hits.  

In the bottom of the seventh, Clements singled to right field and later stole second to get into scoring position. Dixie State then capitalized on an Aggie error to end the game with a 6-5 score. 

At The Plate:  Dixie State had six runs from four at bats. DSU had four RBIs and one double. Clements, Hughbanks, Almeida and Rubio each recorded one hit. 

In the field: Dixie State had 21 putouts and eight assists. Rachel Campbell led with nine putouts while Almeida added three assists. 

In the circle: Kate Dolinski started in the circle and pitched 3.2 innings. She gave up six runs and four hits but rocked three strikeouts. 

Attlyn Johnston closed out the game pitching 3.1 innings. She gave up three hits, one run and three walks, while coming away with six strikeouts. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State now has a 6-12  record overall on the season.

Up Next: DSU will host Southern Utah, New Mexico, Wisconsin and Maine in a tournament March 10-13.
