Trailblazers down T-Birds 3-1 to kick off weekend

Dixie State softball picked up a 3-1 win over in-state rival Southern Utah Thursday afternoon. 

How it happened:  In the bottom of the first inning, Carly Eldredge started things off with a single to third base. Shea Clements followed that up with a single to right field. With runners on first and third SUU had a wild pitch to score the first run of the day. 

In the bottom of the second inning Rachel Campbell sent a ball deep over the left field fence for a single RBI. After three complete innings, DSU had a 2-0 lead. 

Southern Utah set themselves up for a run in the top of the fourth inning and thanks to a sac fly were able to get the run on the board. The Trailblazers didn't take long to answer. In the bottom of four, Marissa Rubio started things off with a single to left. Eldredge and Hannah Hughbanks each drew a walk to load up the bases. 

Laura Lockard then singled to right field for an RBI before the inning closed out. 

The remainder of the game went scoreless for both teams and the Blazers really locked down on defense in the top of the seventh inning. To start things off, Eldredge got hit a grounder, tagged the runner heading to second and threw it to one for a double play. For the third and final out of the game Kate Dolinski picked up a strikeout swinging and DSU walked back to the dugout with smiles. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with seven hits from 24 at bats with three runs and two RBI.  Each of DSU's hits were recorded by a different Trailblazer. Eldredge, Campbell and Rubio each crossed the plate for DSU while Lockard and Campbell recorded the two RBIs. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts, two assists and no errors. Campbell led with 12 putouts while Eldredge and Laura Lockard each had one assist.

In the circle: Attlyn Johnston pitched 6.0 innings and gave up one run, eight hits and one walk. She ended the game with an impressive 10 strikeouts in the 28 batters faced. 

Dolinski came in and closed out the game walking into a two out, two runners on scenario. Dolinski ended the game with with seven pitches in two batters and had the game ending strikeout. 

Notes to know: Dixie State now has a 7-12 record on the season.
