Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Trailblazer women's tennis takes two wins in double header

Dixie State women's tennis played two matches Friday taking home wins in both matches against Arizona Christian and Ottawa.

Versus Arizona Christian:
The Blazers started out the day strong with a 7-0 sweep of Arizona Christian for the Blazers first win of the 2022 season.

After the Arizona Christian win head coach Eric Pelton said, "The girls came out strong in the doubles. They controlled the net and put the pressure on early which helped them close out the big points. They carried their strong play from the doubles into singles and played aggressively, hitting their shots and converting the important points to sweep the singles."

The Blazers were able to sweep all three matches for the doubles point. Juliana Honczaruk and Rachel Mellor were dominant in the No. 1 spot, taking their set 6-3. Sabrina Longson and Jane Dorny in the No. 3 spot also had a quick 6-3 win to take their doubles match. Ya-Chi Hsu and Alexandra Hildreth battled hard for the sweep, taking their match to a 7-5 win.

Singles play was just more dominance from the Blazers. The Blazers took all six singles points with only one match requiring a third set to be played.

Mellor and Dorny played the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, and both took 6-0 wins in their two sets for their wins on the day. Dorny's single and doubles wins against Arizona Christian were the first of her college career.

Longson and Hildreth, in the No. 4 and No. 1 spots, each only allowed Arizona Christian to notch two game wins off each of them. Longson won her sets 6-0 and 6-2, Hildreth the opposite winning 6-2 and 6-0.

Hsu and Honczaruk fought hard through tiebreakers to earn their points for the Blazers. Hsu had to win a tiebreak on her first set, winning 7-6, to get her first set win, then got a comfortable 6-2 win in set two to take her point on the day.

Honczaruk rallied back from losing set one 6-4 to win set two 6-2. Honczaruk's strength showed through as she took a 10-8 win in the tiebreak set to take home her point for the Blazers.

Versus Ottawa:
After a rain delay prolonged the start of the evening matchup with Ottawa, the Trailblazers held strong after a long day of play and earned a 5-2 win over the Spirit.

Starting off the doubles, Longson and Dorny took a quick 6-3 win, followed by Hildreth and Hsu's 6-1 win, to clinch the doubles point for the Blazers.

In singles play, the Blazers fought hard after a long day of play. Mellor started off strong earning the first singles point with 6-1 and 6-0 set scores.

Longson followed closely in suit, winning her singles match with two 6-1 set scores. Juliana Honczaruk earned the Blazers their fourth and victory clinching point in the No. 3 spot with 6-3 and 6-0 set scores, rounding out an undefeated day for her.

Jane Dorny rounded out the day earning the fifth point for the Blazers from the No. 6 spot with an impressive comeback victory against the Spirit. Dorny dropped set one 3-6 but rallied back winning set two 6-4 and the tiebreak set 10-6.
