Trailblazers fall to Grand Canyon in WAC series finale

Dixie State softball closed out its three-game Western Athletic Conference series with Grand Canyon on Saturday, dropping a 10-2 decision in five innings at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (11-19, 2-4 WAC) finished with seven hits during the five-inning contest, but left seven base runners aboard, while Grand Canyon (22-9, 5-1 WAC) pounded out 10 hits en route to the victory.

Dixie State struck first in the bottom of the first on an RBI-infield single by Shea Clements. Hannah Hughbanks drew a leadoff-walk, then moved to third on an Oaklee Trapp single. Hughbanks scored when Clements hit a high chopper up the middle and beat the throw at first to give DSU the 1-0 lead.

Grand Canyon evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third, taking advantage of a leadoff walk with an RBI double to left center. The Lopes took the lead one inning later on a two-run home run to build the 3-1 advantage.

The Trailblazers looked to answer in the bottom of the fourth when Rachel Campbell was hit by a pitch and Madisen Duryea doubled to center field to put two runners on base with just one out. Lauren Almeida drove a single to center field during the next at-bat to score Campbell from third and cut the lead to 3-2, but the next two DSU batters popped up to shortstop and second base to end the threat.

The Lopes exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the top of the fifth, scoring six of the runs with two outs, to extend the lead to 10-2.

Dixie State would get two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth after a Trapp walk and a Laura Lockard single, but GCU struck out the next DSU batter to clinch the victory.

Duryea and Lockard led the Trailblazers at the plate, finishing with two hits each to combine for four of DSU's seven hits, while Clements and Almeida each tallied an RBI. Three DSU pitchers saw time in the circle, with Attlyn Johnston (4-4) taking the loss after striking out two GCU batters through 3.1 innings pitched.

Dixie State will hit the road for the first time in conference play next week, traveling for a three-game WAC series at Seattle U on Friday and Saturday.
