Dixie State drops two to GCU

Dixie State softball dropped two in the double header with Grand Canyon Friday afternoon. First falling 3-2 and then later falling 12-4.

GAME 1
How it happened:  Grand Canyon was the first to get on the board and it was in the top of the second. The Lopes got two runs from four hits. 

Dixie State was finally able to answer in the bottom of the third. Hannah Hughbanks started things off with a single. Shea Clements then smacked one deep over the center field fence to tie the game up with two RBIs. 

The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings went scoreless and the game went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, GCU hit a solo shot for a single run to take a 3-2 lead. Dixie couldn't match in the bottom of the eighth and Grand Canyon took the 3-2 win.

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with just seven hits from 31 at bats with two runs and two RBIs.  DSU drew two walks and had nine strikeouts. DSU had seven different batters in the lineup record hits. 

In the circle: Tyler Denhart pitched the complete 8.0 innings. She gave up six hits, three runs, three earned runs and four walks. She did have two strikeouts. 

GAME TWO
How it happened: Grand Canyon once again wasted no time getting a two run jump on Dixie State. In the top of the first, GCU put up two runs from three hits. In the bottom of the second, Rachel Campbell was able to hit one deep over the left field fence to cut the score deficit in half. 

In the top of the third, GCU managed two runs from two hits and had bases loaded. Kate Dolinski came into the circle and recorded a looking strikeout to get the Blazers out of the sticky situation. 

After three complete, DSU trailed 4-1 to GCU. The Lopes never let up offensively as they managed three runs in the fourth and fifth innings as well as two in the sixth to put them at 12 runs by the end of the game. 
Dixie managed to get two more runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two run homer by Oaklee Trapp. This was Trapp's first bomb of the season. 

At The Plate:  Dixie State ended the game with 11 hits from 28 at bats. DSU recorded three runs with three RBIs and drew four walks. DSU was led by Hughbanks who wnt 3-4. However Campbell went 2-3 with two runs and one RBI. Trapp ended the game going 2-2 with one run, two RBIs and a walk. 

In the circle: Carissa Burgess started in the circle for DSU and pitched 2.2 innings. She gave up six hits, four runs and three walks. She recorded on strikeout. 

Kate Dolinski came in and pitched 1.2 innings giving up seven hits and six runs. Dolinski ended the game with one strikeout.  

Ashtyn Bauerle closed out the game pitching 1.2 innings. She gave up four hits and two runs while coming away with two strikeouts. 
2-3 record in WAC play.

Up Next: Dixie State is now 11-18 overall on the season and 2-3 in WAC play.  DSU will host one more game with Grand Canyon before hitting the road to take on Seattle April 1 and April 2 in a three game series.
