Blazers split double header with Utah Valley in WAC opener

Dixie State softball split the double header with Utah Valley in the WAC opener Friday afternoon. First, DSU fell 6-4 and then later picked up a 7-4 win. 

GAME 1

How it happened:  Utah Valley was the first to get on the board. In the top of the second inning, Utah Valley put up three runs from three hits. UVU kept that 3-0 lead until Kasey Crawford sent a solo shot deep over the right field palm trees in the bottom of the third. 

UVU put one run up in the top of four but Hannah Hughanks immediately countered with a solo homer over the center field fence. After four complete innings, DSU trailed 4-2. 

The Wolverines snuck another run in the top of five to take a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Lauren Almeida decided to join the home run party by smashing a ball deep into center field. After five DSU still trailed by two with a 5-3 score. 

Utah Valley got their final run of the game in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the home run fun continued as Brylee Rudd connected and sent one soaring into the palm trees in left field 

The seventh inning went scoreless for both teams and Dixie ended up falling with a final score of 6-4. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with six hits from 27 at bats with four runs and four RBIs.  Hughbanks and Almeida went 2-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts and eight assists. Catcher Rachel Campbell led with eight putouts while Crawford had an impressive five in center field. Almeida had two assists while Tyler Denhart also added two. 

In the circle: Tyler Denhart started in the circle and pitched 5.2 innings. She gave up 11 hits, six earned runs but did come away with three strikeouts. 

Ashtyn Bauerle finished the game out and pitched 1.1 innings. She gave up just one hit and notched a strikeout.  




GAME TWO
How it happened: Utah Valley once again wasted no time getting a two run jump on Dixie State. In the top of the first, UVU put up two runs from two hits. DSU was able to answer in the bottom of the second inning. Madisen Duryea started things off with a single to left field. Lauren Almeida followed that up with a single and with two runners on Brylee Rudd singled for an RBI. 

After two complete, DSU trailed 2-1. A deficit that didn't last long. 

The Blazers defense locked down in the third and fourth innings. Both innings ended in double plays. In the third Almeida started a 6-4-3 double play put out with Carly Eldredge and Hannah Hughbanks in on it. In the fourth inning, Almeida fielded a ball, stepped on second base and threw it to first for another double play. 

The defensive momentum sparked some offense for Dixie. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Almeida started things with a single to center field. Rudd recorded her second single of the game to put a runner in scoring position. Kasey Crawford then doubled to right center for an RBI and to tie the game. Eldredge then singled for an RBI and then stole second to put two runners on base. 

Rachel Campbell came in to pinch hit for DSU and drew a walk to load up the bases. Hughbanks singled for an RBI. Bases still loaded and Shea Clements singled for an RBI then Laura Lockard drew a walk for an RBI. As the fourth inning closed, DSU put up five runs from six hits to take a 6-2 lead. 

Utah Valley was able to get single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to bring the score to 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Eldredge laid down a bunt to beat out the throw to get a runner on base. Marisa Rubio then laid a sac bunt down to advance Eldredge into scoring position. Clements then singled to put runners on the corners. Clements stole second as Eldredge snuck home for the final run of the game. 

As the seventh inning ended, Dixie walked away with the 7-4 win. 

At The Plate:  Dixie State ended the game with 13 hits from 29 at bats. DSU recorded seven runs from six RBIs and drew two walks. DSU was led by Hughbanks who wnt 3-4 from the plate with one RBI. Eldredge, Clements, Rudd and Almeida each recorded two hits to contribute to the offense. 

In the field: Dixie State had 21 putouts and 12 assists. Hughbanks led with 11 putouts while Clements added six. Eldredge recorded eight assists for the game high. 

In the circle: Kate Dolinski started in the circle and pitched 4.2 innings. She gave up eight hits and three earned runs. She recorded three strikeouts. 

Carissa Burgess closed out the game pitching 2.1 innings. She gave up one hit and one earned run but ended with two strikeouts. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State now has a 10-15  record overall on the season and a 1-1 record in WAC play..

Up Next: DSU will host Utah Valley again tomorrow to end the three game series in the annual Stand Up 2 Cancer game.
