Trailblazers claim series win with 13-5 comeback victory over Utah Valley

Dixie State softball rallied for a 13-5 comeback victory over Utah Valley on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field, claiming the first Western Athletic Conference series of the year in the process.

On a day where the teams and everyone in attendance came together to Stand Up To Cancer, the Trailblazers (11-15, 2-1 WAC) pounded out 14 hits, including three home runs, to earn the six-inning win.

"Series wins are hard to come by in the WAC," head coach Randy Simkins said. "Every team is better this year, so us holding serve at home to get the series win is huge and a big-time confidence booster for us. After the slow start, we had some discussions in the dugout about needing to make adjustments. We were able to do that and start hitting some ground balls and lay off pitches that there were out of the zone."

Utah Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, scoring five runs on five hits, while keeping Dixie State off the board through the first two frames.

After leaving two runners on base in the first inning and another in the second, the Trailblazers broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third. Carly Eldredge started the frame with a single through the left side, then moved to third on a Hannah Hughbanks double. Shea Clements cleared the bases during the next at bat, blasting a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left-center field to cut the UVU lead to 5-3.

The Wolverines looked to answer with back-to-back singles to open the fourth inning, but the Trailblazers ended the threat with three consecutive outs to stay within two runs.

Dixie State pushed three runs across on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to build a 6-5 advantage. After Hughbanks, Clements, and Lauren Almeida tallied hits to load the bases, Laura Lockard belted a double up the middle to plate all three runners and give DSU its first lead of the game.

Utah Valley again looked poised to bounce back in the top of the sixth, putting two runners on base with only one out. But the DSU defense was again up to the task and fought out of the jam when Alemeida snared a line drive at shortstop, followed by a scoop and toss to second for back-to-back outs to end the threat.

The Trailblazers ended the game in the bottom of the sixth as the flood gates opened for seven runs on six hits. Eldredge scored the first run of the frame from third when Clements laid down a bunt single for a perfectly executed squeeze play. Almeida kept things rolling, smashing a towering three-run home run to left field on the next pitch. Not to be outdone, Rachel Campbell belted a two-run home run to left-center, and Eldredge punched an RBI-single through the left side to push the score to the final tally of 13-5.

Seven different Trailblazers tallied a hit in the win, including five players with at least two hits and four players with two or more RBI. Clements led the attack, going 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and three runs scored.

Tyler Denhart (4-3) claimed her fourth win of the season, recording four strikeouts in four innings after entering in the second inning, while Kate Dolinski picked up her third save of the year after recording the final two outs of the top half of the sixth inning.

Dixie State will travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV on Tuesday, before returning to Karl Brooks Field to host Grand Canyon for a three-game WAC series on Friday and Saturday.
