Trailblazers soar past Thunderbirds in five innings Wednesday, 10-1

Denhart tosses six-strikeout gem; DSU hits 3 home runs in the first inning

Dixie State softball earned its second win over Southern Utah in less than a week on Wednesday, soaring to a 10-1 triumph in five innings at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (9-14) pounded out its final tally of eight hits over the first three innings, including three home runs in the first frame. Meanwhile, Tyler Denhart tossed a four-hit, six-strikeout gem, to lead a DSU defensive attack that allowed just three baserunners throughout the contest.

"Tyler threw the ball really well today," head coach Randy Simkins said. "We've been talking about this game for a while and had her penciled in to start, and she threw a gem with the six strikeouts and a whole lot of swing-and-misses. The run support with the three home runs in the first inning was huge as well. We always talk about the difference between being a good hitter and a great hitter is not missing mistakes. We didn't miss many today. Any time the ball caught very much of the white of the plate, we hit the ball well."

Dixie State wasted no time jumping to a lead in the early going, plating six runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. After back-to-back infield singles by Marisa Rubio and Carly Eldredge, Shea Clements blasted the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center for a three-run home run. Two batters later, after an Oaklee Trapp walk, Laura Lockard duplicated the feat with a towering two-run shot to right field. Not to be outdone, Lauren Almeida hit DSU's third home run of the inning during the next at-bat, a solo blast to right field. Rachel Campbell nearly made it four home runs, lifting a ball to deep center field, but it was held up in the wind allowing the SUU center fielder to make a leaping catch at the fence.

The Thunderbirds answered with a solo home run in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 6-1 for its lone run of the game.

The Trailblazers tacked on two more runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. After loading the bases, Oaklee Trapp drove a 2-RBI double into the left-center gap to push the lead to 8-1.

After the DSU defense retired SUU in order, including two Denhart strikeouts, in the top of the third, Dixie State wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on one hit and an SUU miscue to extend the lead to the final tally of 10-1.

Clements led the charge at the plate with DSU's lone multi-hit performance to go with 3 RBI, while Trapp and Lockard each finished with 2 RBI and Almeida added another. Denhart (3-2) earned the win in the circle, posting her third game of at least six strikeouts, as well as her third complete-game victory of the year.

The Trailblazers will open Western Athletic Conference play with a three-game series vs. Utah Valley, beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
