Blazers fall to Badgers 12-7

Dixie State softball got the jump on the University of Wisconsin but couldn't maintain it as the Badgers came away with a 12-7 win over the Trailblazers. 

How it happened:  Carly Eldredge started the game off with a double to left center. Hannah Hughbanks followed that off with a double for the RBI. Shea Clements stayed hot in the lineup with a double to left center for an RBI and as the first inning closed DSU had two runs from three doubles. 

WIsconsin wasted no time answering in the bottom of the first inning the Badgers got two runs from one hit and two errors to tie the score 2-2. 

In the top of the second inning, Oaklee Trapp started things off with a single up the middle. Lauren Almeida then was hit by a pitch to be placed on base and with two runners on, Rachel Campbell homered deep over the left field fence for three RBIs. Campbell's homer boosted DSU to a 5-2 lead over UW. 

The Trailblazers continued to push in the top of the fourth inning. Almeida drew a walk before Campbell came up with a single. Two runners on base and Marisa Rubio singles to the short stop for an RBI. Runners on the corner and Rubio takes off from first to second and is caught stealing as Campbell sneaks across the plate for a run. 

Wisconsin was able to get two runs from three hits in the bottom of the fourth but after four complete, Dixie had a 6-4 lead. 

The bottom of the fifth the Trailblazers found themselves in a tough spot. The Badgers were able to get eight runs from seven hits, including two home runs, and two errors to jump to s 12-6 lead. 

In the top of the seventh, Clements jacked a bomb to left center to try and spark some offense for Dixie in the final push. Despite getting one more hit in the inning, DSU couldn't catch up and fell 12-7 to Wisconsin. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with 15 hits from 32 at bats with seven runs and six RBIs.  Clements led DSU at the plate going 3-4 with two RBIs, one double, one homer and one run. Eldredge also went 3-4 at the plate with one run and one double. Campbell finished the 2-4 at the plate with two runs, two RBIs and one homer. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 18 putouts and nine assists. Hughbanks led with seven putouts while Lauren Almeida had four assists. 

In the circle: Tyler Denhart started in the circle for DSU and pitched 3.2 innings. She gave up five hits, four runs, two earned and two walks. She recorded one strikeout. 

Kate Dolinski came in and pitched one inning. She gave up six hits and seven runs to record the loss on the game. 

Ashtyn Bauerle finished the game out  and gave up just one hit, one run and one walk. 

Notes to know: Dixie State now has a 8-14 record on the season. 

Up Next: Dixie State will stay home for four consecutive games. DSU will first host Southern Utah University in a rescheduled match up with the T-Brids, Wednesday March 16 at 5:00 p.m. Western Athletic Conference action starts March 18-19 as the Trailblazers will host Utah Valley in a three game series.
