Big sixth inning pushes DSU to 14-6 win over Maine

Dixie State softball's nine runs in the sixth inning leads the Trailblazers to a 14-6 victory over the Maine Black Bears Saturday evening. 

How it happened:  Dixie State wasted no time getting on the board. In the bottom of the first inning, Hannah Hughbanks started things with a double to left center. Shea Clements then singled up the middle to score Hughbanks. Clements then stole second to be in scoring position for Laura Lockard who singled through the right side for an RBI. As the inning closed, DSU had a 2-0 lead. 

In the top of two, Maine answered with a single run. Later in the bottom of the third, Hughbanks doubled for the second time. Lockard then flew out to right field for a sac fly as Hughbanks scored. After three complete innings, DSU had a 3-1 lead. 

In the bottom of the fourth, with two runners on base, Kasey Crawford hit a triple for two RBIs to push the Dixie lead to 5-1. 

The Black Bears had a big fifth inning putting up four runs from four hits to tie the game at 5-5. Later in the top of the sixth inning, Maine put up one run to take a 6-5 lead. 

The bottom of the sixth was massive for the Trailblazers. Crawford started things off with a solo shot over the right field fence. Later, DSU loaded up the bases and then were able to draw four walks for four runs. With bases loaded, Marisa Rubio tripled to right center for three RBIs to put the Trailblazers up 14-6 to end the game. No seventh inning necessary. 

Dixie State ended the sixth with nine runs from five hits. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with 12 hits from 30 at bats with 14 runs and 14 RBIs.  Crawford led DSU going 2-3 at the plate with two runs and four RBIs including one homerun. Hughbanks also went 2-3 with three runs scored. Clements and Rubio also had two hits.   

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 18 putouts and eight assists. Hughbanks led with eight putouts while Laura Lockard had three assists. 

In the circle: Carissa Burgess started in the circle for Dixie and pitched 4.2 innings. She gave up four runs, four hits and four walks. She did have two strikeouts. 

Tyler Denhart finished out the game pitching 1.1 innings giving up three hits and two runs. She had one walk and one strikeout. 

Notes to know: Dixie State now has a 8-13 record on the season. 

Up Next: The Dixie State tournament will conclude tomorrow as DSU will host two neutral games before taking on Wisconsin at 3:00 p.m.
