Dixie State falls 7-6 to New Mexico

Dixie State softball matched New Mexico until the final inning but ultimately fell 7-6 to the Lobos Friday evening. 

How it happened:  The Trailblazers were the first to get on the board in the top of the second inning, Laura Lockard started things off with a single up the middle. Oaklee Trapp followed that with a single through the left side. Lauren Almeida laid down a beautiful sac bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. Kasey Crawford then singled up the middle for two RBIs. Thanks to an error by the third baseman DSU was able to get another run and was up 3-0. 

In the bottom of the second UNM answered with two runs from three hits and after two complete innings the score sat with a 3-2 score in favor of the Trailblazers. 

In the bottom of the third inning, New Mexico put up two runs from two hits to take the lead away from Dixie State. DSU didn't waste time answering. In the top of the fourth inning, Dixie had runner in scoring position when Crawford doubled to left field for an RBI to tie the game back up. As the fourth inning closed, the game was tied up at 4-4. 

The Lobos put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to jump up to a 6-4 lead over the Trailblazers. In the top of the sixth, Crawford started things off with a smashed ball to right center for a double. Carly Eldredge drew a walk and then Hannah Hughbanks lined to right center for two RBIs to tie the game up at 6-6. 

New Mexico was able to end the game in the bottom of the seventh with a walk off single to right field for a final score of 7-6.

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with nine hits from 29 at bats with six runs and five RBIs.  Crawford led DSU going 3-3 at the plate with two runs and three RBIs.  

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 20 putouts and nine assists. Hughbanks led with eight putouts while Lauren Almeida and Kate Dolinski had three assists. 

In the circle: Kate Dolinski pitched five innings for DSU and gave up eight hits, six runs and just one walk. She recorded one strikeout on the night. 

Ashtyn Bauerle came in and pitched 1.2 innings. She gave up four hits one run and one walk. She recorded one strikeout. 

Notes to know: Dixie State now has a 7-13 record on the season. 
Up Next: Dixie State will continue to host Maine, Wisconsin, Southern Utah and New Mexico throughout the rest of the weekend. Tomorrow the Trailblazers will take on the Bears of Maine at 5:30 p.m.
