Dixie State opened the road portion of its 2022 WAC slate on the short end of a 9-2 decision at Sacramento State on Friday night at John Smith Field.
Trailing 2-0 after one inning, DSU (6-6/2-2 WAC) got one of those runs back with a
Will Chambers opposite field single with two outs in the second.
The Hornets (9-5/1-0 WAC) countered with three runs in the home second, and single runs in both the fourth and fifth frames to extend to a commanding 7-1 lead through five complete.
Chambers picked up another two-out RBI in the sixth when he singled home
Sean Keating, who reached on a lead-off double. However that would be it for the Blazer offense as the Sacramento State bullpen limited DSU to one hit and three total baserunners over the final three innings to close out the game.
Chambers finished night 2-for-3 with a walk, while Keating had the one double and two runs scored, as DSU collected six hits in the game. Sophomore righthander
Dillon Holliday (L, 1-2) tied a season-high with six strikeouts, though he was touched up for six earned runs and nine hits over five innings of work.
The two teams will play the middle of their three-game weekend series on Saturday evening beginning at 5 p.m. (MT).
