Dixie State falls 5-0 to Weber State

Dixie State softball opened its tournament with a 5-0 loss to Weber State on Thursday afternoon. 

How it happened:  The Trailblazers and Wildcats battled in the first four innings with neither team scoring. Dixie State was able to get six hits in the first four innings but left eight runners on base. The Wildcats only had three hits and left six runners on base. 

Weber State was able to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning. WSU put up five runs thanks to six hits and two DSU errors. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Shea Clements singled down the left field line to try and spark some offensive momentum. Hannah Hughbanks then drew a walk followed by a single by Lauren Almeida. Bases were juiced with just one out but the Trailblazers couldn't get any runs around and WSU maintained the 5-0 lead. 

The sixth inning went scoreless for both teams and DSU was able to lock it in on defensive preventing Weber State from putting up runs in the seventh. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Blazers tried to eliminate the goose egg on their score line, but left three runners on base as Weber State executed the third out.   

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with nine hits from 29 at bats and left 15 runners on base. DSU drew six walks and had seven strikeouts. Clements, Marissa Rubio and Carly Eldredge each recorded two hits.  

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts and 11 assists. Hughbanks led with 12 putouts while Almeida had four assists and Laura Lockard had three. 

In the circle: Kate Dolinski pitched 4.0 innings. She gave up seven hits, four runs and three walks. She got just one strikeout. 

Attlyn Johnston came in and pitched the final three innings. She gave up four hits, one run and one walk. She ended the game with four strikeouts. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State now has a 2-9 record overall on the season. 

Up Next: The Dixie State tournament continues as Dixie State will host three neutral games between Utah Valley, Weber State, Nevada and Winthrop before taking on Nevada at 5:30 p.m.
