Trailblazers blank Nevada in five-inning shutout

DSU earns first shutout victory of the year

Dixie State softball earned its first shutout victory of the season on Friday, blanking Nevada for an 8-0 triumph in five innings at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (3-8) pounded out 10 hits over the five-inning contest, while limiting the Wolfpack to just one hit and three baserunners.

"We played well in all three phases of the game," head coach Randy Simkins said. "Our main focus was to get runners on base and bring them in. We did that tonight. Tyler also threw an absolute gem, while our defense was in the right spots and made very few mistakes."

Nevada put its only runner in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Tyler Denhart made sure it wouldn't turn into a run, firing her first of a career-high seven strikeouts to end the inning.

The Dixie State bats came alive in the top of the second, and the Trailblazers plated three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead. After a walk and single, Lauren Almeida opened the scoring with an RBI single. Two batters later, Madisen Duryea belted a sacrifice fly to right field, followed by an RBI single by Carly Eldredge to cap the second-frame scoring.

Denhart picked up where she left off in the bottom of the second, and struck out the Nevada side. The Trailblazer defense retired six of the next seven UNR batters to carry the 3-0 advantage into the fifth inning.

Needing five runs to end the game in five innings, the DSU offense delivered with five runs on five hits to push the lead to 8-0. After Marissa Rubio scored on a wild pitch, Lauren Almeida blasted a first-pitch 2 RBI single off the right-field fence with the bases loaded. Oaklee Trapp kept things rolling with an RBI single to left field, followed by the second RBI single of the night from Eldredge to give the Trailblazers the final run needed.

The DSU defense locked things down in the bottom of the seventh as Denhart tossed two more strikeouts and Rubio chased down a deep fly ball in left-center field to complete the victory.

Three Trailblazers finished with multi-hit games as Alemeida (3 RBI) finished with a career-high three hits, while Eldredge (2 RBI) and Rubio added two hits each. Denhart (1-0) picked up her first victory in a DSU uniform, allowing just one hit with a career-high seven strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.

Dixie State will take on Winthrop in the first of two consecutive matchups between the teams on Saturday. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
