Trailblazers split Sunday DH with Utah State, Weber State

Dixie State claims series win over USU

Dixie State softball closed its first weekend of home games with a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (2-7) opened the day with a 5-4 victory over Utah State, claiming a series win over the Aggies in the process. DSU dropped a 10-7 decision to Weber State in the weekend finale, closing the week with a 2-2 record.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 5, Utah State 4

Utah State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of an errant throw to the plate with runners on the corners.

Dixie State responded in the bottom of the third, using five hits and a USU error to score all five of its runs. Three different Trailblazers posted RBI hits in the inning, including RBI singles by Lauren Almeida, Oaklee Trapp, and Rachel Campbell. Trapp scored later in the frame on a USU miscue. Kasey Crawford wrapped up the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Jessica A'i to the plate from third.

The Aggies scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single, and threatened to add more with two runners on base and only one out. Kate Dolinski and the Trailblazers quickly eliminated the threat as Dolinski forced a groundout to third base, followed by a strikeout on the first two batters she faced to get out of the jam.

USU tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth to trim the DSU lead to 5-4, but the Dixie State defense tallied three consecutive outs in the top of the seventh to claim the victory.

The Trailblazers finished with 10 hits, while holding USU to seven hits. Shea Clements posted a 3-for-4 performance to lead DSU at the plate, while Campbell tallied two hits and an RBI.

Attlyn Johnston claimed her first win of the season, striking out five in 4.1 innings of work. Dolinski notched her first save in a DSU uniform, allowing two hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings.

GAME TWO – Weber State 10, Dixie State 7

Dixie State erased an early 1-0 deficit with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. Marisa Rubio scored the first run of the frame after a WSU miscue in the outfield allowed her to gain an extra base after a Crawford single. Laura Lockard blasted an RBI single to center field to give the home squad its first lead at 2-1.

Weber State wasted no time reclaiming the lead, turning four hits, including a solo home run and a double, into three runs and a 4-2 advantage.

The Trailblazers answered with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a 2 RBI double by Almeida, to retake the lead at 6-4.

DSU would add one final run in the bottom of the fifth when Crawford singled up the middle to bring Carly Eldredge home from second, but the Wildcats added six more runs over the final three innings to seal the 10-7 win.

Dixie State recorded 15 hits in the loss, its second-highest hitting output of the season. Rubio led the charge, going 4-for-5 at the plate, while Crawford, Clements, Lockard, Almeida, and Eldredge each finished with two hits.

Ashtyn Bauerle posted three strikeouts in 4.1 innings, while Johnston allowed five hits with one strikeout in her second loss of the year.

The Trailblazers will host the Dixie State Tournament at Karl Brooks Field later this week, taking on Weber State, Nevada, and Winthrop.
