Dixie State splits double header with Utah State

Dixie State softball picked up its first win of the season in the double header split against Utah State Saturday afternoon. 

GAME ONE
How it happened:  The Trailblazers stuck it to the Aggies in the first inning. In the top of the first, DSU locked in defense with three batters up and took three batters down. On the offensive side in the first inning, Marissa Rubio started things off with a single. Shea Clements then rocked one over the fence for two RBIs. 

Laura Lockard singled to right field and Lauren Almeida followed that up with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Rachel Campbell then doubled for two RBIs as the inning concluded with Dixie having a 4-0 lead. 

Later in the bottom of the third inning, Campbell hit a bomb over left field  for three RBIs to push DSU's lead to 7-0. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Clements singled to third base and later advanced to scoring position. Oaklee Trapp then doubled for an RBI getting one more run across for Dixie State. 

DSU held Utah State scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Aggies put up four runs from four hits to bring the score 8-4. 

In the bottom of the fifth the Trailblazers got some wiggle room back in the score. Jessica A'i singled to right field. Carly Eldredge followed that up with a single for an RBI. Dixie had a five run lead going into the final two innings. 

The Aggies put up one more run in the top of the seventh but a catch by Clements in right field ended the game before any more runs scored. Dixie State earned its first win of the season with a 9-5 score. 

At the plate: Clements led at the plate going 2-4, scored two runs, two RBIs and one homerun. Everyone in the lineup got at least one hit and all but one got two hits. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts and 14 assists. Trapp led with nine putouts while Almeida, Lockard and Kate Dolinski each had three assists. 

In the circle: Kate Dolinski pitched 6.0 innings. She gave up eight hits, five runs and two walks. She did get the win on the game and had four strikeouts, three of which were looking. 

Ashtyn Bauerle came in and closed out the seventh inning giving up just one walk in the three batters faced. 

GAME TWO
How it happened: Utah State put up five runs in the top of the first inning thanks to five hits and a Trailblazer error. In the bottom of the first Clements singled to get on base, Lockard singled up the middle to advance the runner and a wild pitch sent Clements safely home. As the first inning ended, DSU trailed 5-1. 

Both teams put up a run in the third inning. Crawford singled to center field and Lockard followed that up with a single to right field to put Crawford on third. Almeida flew out to left field for the sacrifice fly and the RBI. 

At the end of the third inning the score was 6-2. Utah State went on to put up two more runs before the game concluded and finished with the 8-2 victory. 

At The Plate: Laura Lockard led DSU at the plate going 3-4. Rubio, Crawford and Clements were the three other Trailblazer to get hits. 

In the field: Dixie State had 12 putouts and six assists. Clements led with 10 putouts while Eldredge added four assists. 

In the circle: Carissa Burgess started in the circle for the Trailblazers and gave up eight hits, seven runs, and two walks. Burgess did end with five strikeouts. 

Freshman Attlyn Johnson came in and pitched 3.2 innings.  She gave up four hits, one run and one walk. She had five strikeouts. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State now has a 1-7 record overall on the season. 

Up Next: Tomorrow the Trailblazers will host Utah State in the final game of the three game series before hosting Weber State in a single game.
