Softball concludes opening weekend with two losses

Dixie State finished out the opening weekend with a pair of losses. First DSU fell to the University of San Diego 7-3 and then later fell to Colorado State 12-0. 

GAME ONE
How it happened: In the bottom of the first inning, Dixie State got on the board first thanks to a homered ball over the center field fence by Shea Clements for a 1-0 lead. 

It wasn't until the top of the third when USD answered with a big five run inning. Thanks to four hits and one Dixie State error. 

In the bottom of the third Clements struck again with her second home run of the game, this time over left field to bring the score 5-2. 

The fourth and fifth innings went scoreless for both teams. It wasn't until the top of the sixth that San Diego was able to get two more runs for a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Lauren Almeida singled to second base to get a runner on base. Thanks to a wild pitch, DSU had a runner in scoring position. Clements then reached on a fielders choice for an RBI to put the score at 7-3 heading into the seventh inning. 

Dixie State locked it in on defense and didn't let a single ball past the infield getting three outs from the first three batters. In the bottom of the seventh, Oaklee Trapp tried to spark some offensive momentum for the Trailblazers. DSU wasn't able to find any as they fell 7-3 to San Diego. 

At the plate: Crawford went 2-3 at the plate with two runs and three RBIs.  Almeida also went 2-3 at the plate. In total, DSU had six hits from 26 at bats with three runs scored. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts and nine assists. Hannah Hughbanks and Clements each had five putouts while Laura Lockard and Almeida each had a pair of assist. 

In the circle: Attlyn Johnson started in the circle for Dixie State and pitched 5.1 innings. She gave up seven hits, six runs and two walks. She did have four strikeouts. 

Kate Dolinski finished out the game in the circle pitching 1.2 innings giving up one hit, one run and hsd one strikeout. 


GAME TWO
How it happened: Dixie State and Colorado State both went scoreless in the first inning. In the second inning, Rachel Campbell was able to get a hit with a single to third base but was ultimately left on base. 

Colorado State was able to get three runs from two hits and one error in the second inning. CSU had bases loaded with two outs as Ellie Evans was able to execute the grounder to get Dixie out of the inning leaving three Rams stranded. 

In the bottom of the third, CSU put up nine runs from eight hits and one error to give Colorado State a 12-0 lead by the end of three. 

Hannah Hughbanks got a single in the fourth inning and Campbell rocked a double in the fifth but DSU couldn't get any runs across the plate as the game ended after five. 

At The Plate: Hannah Hughbanks and Rachel Campbell were the only two Trailblazers to record a hit against the Rams with Campbell going 2-2 at the plate. 

In the field: Dixie State had 12 putouts and four assists. Hughbanks led with five putouts while Campbell had four. Evans led with four assists. 

Notes to Know: Dixie State now has a 0-5 record overall on the season. 

Up Next: The Trailblazers will host Idaho State on Thursday Feb. 17 at noon before hosting Utah State in a three game series Feb. 19-20.
