Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

MSOC draws UTRGV 1-1 in Edinburg

Utah Tech men's soccer headed on the road for its first road conference match of the season and came away with a hard fought 1-1 draw against UTRGV on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Trailblazers pressed from the opening whistle. Just over a minute into the match, defender Traedon Chamberlain was able to get a shot on goal that nearly was the opener.

However, the Vaqueros countered with an attempt of their own and were able to break through, finding a goal in just the 3rd minute of play.

Taylor Rogers answered this goal with a shot of his own that forced Vaquero goalkeeper Simon Madsen to make a big save to keep it level in the 12th minute. Just five minutes later, Rogers would earn the assist.

Rogers was dribbling the ball across the top of the 18-yard box when he saw an onrushing Anthony Godinez and slid the ball out wide to him. Godinez one-timed the ball and sent a rocket of a shot into the back of the net to level the match.

With things all level at the halftime break, Utah Tech looked to find a goal in the second half. The Vaqueros kept pressing as well and were able to get good looks at goal, but freshman goalkeeper Stockton Short made five saves on the night to keep them at one goal.

The Trailblazers nearly found a breakthrough in the final 15 minutes of play but were unable to put it in the back of the net. In the dying moments of the match Aby Gomez had the teams closest look of the second half but a miraculous save from Madsen ended the game 1-1.

STAT BREAKDOWN:  The Trailblazers had seven shots with four on goal. Aby Gomez led the team with two shots, one on target. Traedon Chamberlain, Anthony Godinez, Jimi Villasenor, Taylor Rogers and Kyle Walbruch had one apiece.

Anthony Godinez scored the Trailblazers lone goal of the night in the 18th minute, the first of his collegiate career.

Stockton Short started and played the full 90 minutes in goal, making five saves and allowing just one goal. This was Short's collegiate debut.

UTRGV ended the match with 15 shots, having six on goal. The team was shown four yellow cards, and their goalkeeper made three saves.

NOTES TO KNOW: The Trailblazers now have a 3-7-1 record on the season and have a 1-1-1 record in WAC play. The Blazers have scored six goals this season all from different people and have two shutouts.

Two Trailblazers were shown yellow in this match, one to Jimi Villasenor and Larsen Rogers. These were both their first yellows of the season.

Goalkeeper Stockton Short started in goal in his collegiate debut. Additionally, Traedon Chamberlain saw his first minutes of the season. Both players played the full 90 minutes.

UP NEXT: Utah Tech will stay in Texas for a Sunday afternoon matchup with Houston Christian on Oct. 9. The Trailblazers will look to hold an all-time undefeated record against the Huskies. After closing out the road trip the Blazers will return home for a pair of matches with Seattle and San Jose State.
