Dixie State falls 75-68 to UTRGV

Dixie State women's basketball and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley played a game of teeter-tottered Saturday afternoon where Dixie State ended with a 75-68 loss. 

How it Happened: The Trailblazers started the game on a two minute scoring drought. Emily Isaacson finished a layup from Breaunna Gillen to break the drought and put DSU on the board. Dixie State hung tight throughout the first quarter only trailing narrowly 27-20 going into the second quarter. 

The scoring pace slowed dramatically for both teams in the second quarter. Both teams started on a two minute drought. Maggie McCord hit a three point to break Dixie's drought. Neither team scored for over two minutes coming out of the media timeout until Brooke Vance sunk a single free throw. In the final two minutes of the half, the Trailblazers went on a 6-0 run and held UTRGV to five scoreless minutes. 

At the half, Dixie State trailed just 33-31. 

Averi Papa gets a layup in the first minute of the third quarter that sparked a 9-2 run propelling the Trailblazers to a 40-37 lead over the Vaqueros. DSU stayed on top as the third quarter ended with a narrow 51-48 score. 

The fourth quarter was a game of back and forths. The Vaquerros came back and tied it and took the lead. However, the Trailblazers answered to tie and then took the lead back. This pattern continued throughout the entire fourth, there were just 30 seconds on the clock and DSU trailed by three and had two turnovers as UTRGV was able to come away with a 75-68 victory. 

Leaders: Dixie State was led by Gillen who scored 15 points and eight assists. 
Warren ended the game with 14 total points, all of which in the second half. Isaacson was the final Blazer in double figures with 12 on the afternoon. 

Shanaijah Davison had 10 rebounds and was on the brink of a triple double with nine points and nine assists. 

Comparison: Dixie State ended the game shooting 34 percent from the field, 32 percent from the three and 81 percent from the free throw line. The Trailblazers totaled 32 rebounds, 21 assists, 10 steals and 13 turnovers. 

UTRGV shot 41 percent from the field, 26 percent from the three and 71 percent from the free throw line. The Vaqueros ended the game with 48 rebounds, 20 assists, 10 steals and 16 turnovers.

Notes to Know: DSU is now 6-12 overall on the season and 2-5 in WAC play. 

Up next: Dixie State will return to the Burns Arena with Jan. 29 to host Chicago State.
