Trailblazers women soccer battled through a 1-0 loss to Weber State Sunday afternoon.Â
WHAT HEAD COACH MOLLY ROUSE SAID: "All things considered, we are pleased with the performance our team put together today. Weber State was coming off a full week of recovery and had super impactful players. They presented many challenges to us within the first 45 minutes of the match. Seeing how the Trailblazers responded after halftime was something we are very excited about. We created enough chances to tie the match, while fighting for every inch we earned on the field. For a team that faced an uphill battle in terms of recovery and depth, we are proud of the grit the team showed in today's performance. We will utilize what we learned in this match, as a building block when preparing for our first home contest vs Pacific on Friday."
HOW IT HAPPENED: Weber State's offense was on the attack in the first half putting the Blazers in defense mode. The Wildcat goal came in the 26th minute after a WSU corner kick.
Kayla Gonzales fended off two shots on goal before the corner and the Blazers came away with a save before WSU finally snuck one into the back of the net.Â
In the first half, Dixie State came away with nine saves from WSU's 10 shots on frame. Weber State had 11 shots in the first half while Dixie only had one.Â
DSU's defensive efforts were the star of the show in the second half with Gonzales and crew shutting down Weber State's 12 attacks with six on frame.Â
In the second half, Dixie State was able to get attacks on frame but couldn't finish a goal. DSU's offense kicked into gear in the final 10 minutes with the Blazers maintaining possession but the final buzzer rang out and the Wildcats claimed the 1-0 victory. Â
STAT BREAKDOWN: Kenna Sparks led the Blazers with three shots and two of them on frame. Bennett recorded three shots with one on goal and one assist.Â
Kayla Gonzales played lights out in the net for DSU and came away with 13 saves for a career high and allowed one goal.Â
