Trailblazers fall in overtime to golden goal from Pacific Tigers

Box Score It would take 90 minutes and a golden goal to separate the Trailblazers and the Tigers, but despite scoring first, the Trailblazers would fall 2-1 to Pacific University.

WHAT ASSISTANT COACH JENNIE CLARK SAID: "It's an unfortunate result for how hard the team fought through this game. The amount of effort and quality soccer that was played throughout the game created some great opportunities and shined light on some areas we can continue to grow. I'm extremely proud of the team and how hard they continue to work to get better each week. I'm looking forward to Sunday for our players to be able to respond after a heartbreak game like this one."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Trailblazers finally got their first home match of the season after a six-game road stint to open their 2021 season. Lining up against the Tigers, DSU started all the keys to their team, including Jill Bennett, Whitley Griffiths, and Kelsey Cook.

From the opening whistle, this match was back and forth between these teams. Pacific had the slight edge on possession time with 55%, but neither team had consistent ball control.

The Trailblazers had just two shots in the first half but still were able to earn the lead.

The lead came off an assist from Whitley Griffiths, who found an open Jill Bennett running up the far side of the field. In the 30' minute, Bennett slid the ball past onrushing Pacific goalkeeper Brenna Crump to find the back of the net.

The Trailblazers lead 1-0 at the half. Bennett's goal was her first of the season.

Out of the halftime break, the game continued more of the same as the first half. Neither team was able to find a rhythm. It took the Tigers until the 68' to find their tying goal. Pacifics Aniela Jensen found the equalizer, shooting past Kayla Gonzales.

DSU gave it their best effort for the rest of the second half, but after registering just one shot, they could not find the winning goal, and the game was forced into extra time.

Right at the start of the first extra-time period, Jill Bennett registered her final shot of the night, but off another ball from Whitley Griffiths, Bennett sent the ball just high over the crossbar.

The difference in this one would be Pacific's corner kick in the 94' would be the difference in this one. DSU had given up several corners in this game, and both goals came indirectly off set pieces. After chaos in the box, Pacific's Hunter More would knock home the golden goal to end the game.

STAT BREAKDOWN:
Kayla Gonzales started in the net for the Trailblazers and had 11 saves in this match. Gonzales stood on her head against a fruitful Tigers attack.

The Tigers outshot the Trailblazers 18-8, but senior Jill Bennett led the Trailblazers with four of the team's shots. Whitley Griffiths had three, and Savannah Stauffer rounded out the last one for the team's eight.

UP NEXT: The Trailblazers head back out on the road for an away matchup against the University of Utah. Kickoff with the Utes is slated for 3 PM. They then head to face Southern Utah before getting a three-game homestand.
