Trailblazer Men's Soccer Suffers First Road Loss at Cal

Box Score DSU men's soccer saw a 2-0 loss on their first road trip of the 2021 season to Cal-Berkeley. Despite playing a clean first half, the Trailblazers could not withstand the Bears' attack in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Trailblazers welcomed back two key seniors Matt Lockwood and Idris Alabi to the starting 11 for the first time this season. The pair were a key to the team's success last season, and their return helped bring some veteran leadership back to the Trailblazers.

The first half was a lot of back-and-forth action between the Trailblazers and the Bears. The Trailblazers earned five shots in the first half and tested Bears goalkeeper Chris Gustini. Forward Tony Foulger had two shots in the first half, but he and the Trailblazers failed to find the back of the net.

Defender Dominique Kossehasse had a solid first half on both sides of the ball. He held the Bears scoreless and even registered a shot in the first half, but the ball went high.

Trailblazers goalkeeper Jakob Moore registered three saves in the first half to keep the game level.

Out of the halftime break, the Bears attack came out firing on all cylinders. The Bears broke the deadlock just six minutes out of the break off an entire team buildup that resulted in Jack Singer hitting the final ball past Moore.

The Bears struck again in the 63' when Evan Davila ran onto a ball from Christopher Grey at the top of the Trailblazers six-yard box.

From there, the Trailblazers were unable to find anything in the back of the net. John Joseph subbed into the match shortly before Cal's second goal and registered three shots but could not break through the Bears lockdown defense.

NOTES TO KNOW:
This is the Trailblazers' first road loss of the 2021 season. The team is now 1-2-0 so far on the 2021 season.

This is the first of five straight road matches for the Trailblazers. Up next, they face West Coast Conference member Saint Mary's.

After returning from injuries, Matt Lockwood went for 57 minutes, Idris Alabi played 32 minutes.

STAT BREAKDOWN:
Goalkeeper Jakob Moore started in goal for DSU, didn't allow a goal in the first half, and had three saves.

The Trailblazers outshot the Bears 11 to eight and registered five shots on goal compared to Cal's two. It just wasn't enough to get past the Bears' defense.

DSU drew 12 fouls and forced the Bears to take three yellow cards. The Trailblazers only saw two yellows and 11 fouls.

UP NEXT:
The Trailblazers head next to face the Saint Mary's Gaels on Monday, Sept. 6 at 1:00 PM (PT). The Trailblazers will have three more road games after that before they return home to face Kyle Beckerman's Utah Valley University on Sept. 25 at 5:00 PM.
