Trailblazers women soccer's lag in the final 10 minutes leads to a 5-1 loss to Grand Canyon Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Grand Canyon was the first team to get a shot on goal in the sixth minute but DSU's keeper
Kayla Gonzales snatched it before going in. The Lopes continued the intense pressure on the Blazers defense getting off four more shots before scoring a goal in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 20th minute, DSU found themselves in a great position to score with a corner kick. Noela Nawahine fired off a shot that bounced off the crossbar but the Blazers couldn't finish.
In the 32nd minute, Grand Canyon found success on the attack for its second goal of the game.
In the second half, Dixie had two shots on goal early but couldn't capitalize. GCU scored for the third time in the 73rd minute.
DSU turned up the offensive attack and didn't let GCU claim the shutout. McKinley Barney took a corner, dished it to Lauren Buxton who then gave it back to Barney. Barney crossed it into the net and Kalea Woodyatt headed the ball for the Trailblazers lone goal of the game.
The Lopes managed to get two more goals before the 90 minutes were complete to make the final score 5-1.
STAT BREAKDOWN: Tess Donaldson led the Blazers with two shots.
However, there were seven different Trailblazers who took shots and three different Blazers with shots on frame. Woddyat scored the lone goal for DSU.
Kayla Gonzales was in the net for the Trailblazers and played the full 90 minutes. She came away with eight saves.
Dixie State ended the game with eight total shots and three on goal while Grand Canyon ended with 16 total shots and 13 on goal.
