Trailblazers women soccer had a final minute surge that wasn't enough as Dixie State fell 3-2 to Utah Valley Saturday evening.
WHAT HEAD COACH MOLLY ROUSE SAID: "Tonight's team performance against the defending WAC champions was an excellent demonstration of growth by staying committed to the process. We were encouraged to see the team showcase an ability to adjust team tactics and execute critical moments of the game. Once again, we were able to rotate deep into our roster while maintaining a high level throughout the match. Against such a worthy opponent, we prepared to be the best connected and grittiest team possible, and seeing the group fight until the final whistle was nothing short of inspiring. We are excited to transition this energy into our next weekend on the road vs Seattle and Cal Baptist."
HOW IT HAPPENED: To start things off, Dixie State drew themselves a corner in the seventh minute.
McKinley Barney took the corner for Dixie State and sent the ball into
Jill Bennett who was waiting around the 18 yard box. Bennett took control and then fired a shot with her left foot that sunk into the left side upper 90 for a Blazers goal.
Just five minutes later, Utah Valley was able to get on the board with a goal of their own to make the score 1-1.
In the first half, Dixie State only recorded one shot, and made it count as it was Bennett's goal. Utah Valley ended the half with 10 shots with five on goal. The Blazers had four saves in the first half and were able to draw five corner kicks.
As the second half got underway, Utah Valley captured the momentum and was able to get a second goal in the 54th minute to take a 2-1 lead over DSU. Later, UVU was able to get another goal in the 65th minute.
In the 84th minute, Dixie State drew a corner. Barney took the corner and dropped it back to Lauren Buxton. Buxton sent it into the masses where Brynlee Roberts collided with the keeper but was able to get a body on the ball for a goal.
In the final 10 minutes of the game the Trailblazers picked up the intensity and put a lot of pressure on the Wolverines. As the 90 minutes concluded Utah Valley came away with the 3-2 win over Dixie State.
