Trailblazers open WAC play with sweep of Grand Canyon

DSU earns first win over GCU since 2011

Dixie State volleyball opened its 2021 Western Athletic Conference schedule on a high note on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of Grand Canyon inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (2-7, 1-0 WAC) posted a season-best .221 hitting percentage and matched a season-high mark with 13 total blocks en route to their first three-set victory of the year. DSU also snapped a six-game losing skid vs. GCU in the process, a stretch that spanned back to 2011 when both teams were NCAA Division II members of the Pacific West Conference.

"This win was huge for us to start conference play on a positive note," head coach Camilla Hafoka said. "We've been focusing on this all week and wanted to come out with a bang. I felt like our practices leading up to tonight have been very fluid, and it was nice to see what we worked on in practice trickle into gameplay. It's fun to watch our players do that and build confidence moving forward."

Dixie State opened an 8-3 lead early in the first set behind two Kate Hardy kills and a pair of errors by Grand Canyon. GCU countered with its own 8-3 run to tie the match at 11-11. DSU seemed to grab control of the frame with a 6-2 stretch to build a 17-13 advantage, but the 'Lopes fought back to pull even at 17-17. The set went back-and-forth from there, until DSU scored five of the final six points to turn a 20-20 tie into a 25-21 triumph.
The teams traded points throughout the entire second set as neither side would lead by more than three points. Grand Canyon built the largest lead of the frame at 11-8, but Dixie State quickly answered with a 4-1 spurt to tie the game at 12-12. Over the next 28 plays, neither squad would score consecutive points as the set seesawed from one side to the other. With the score tied at 23-23, DSU finally broke through with back-to-back points for a 25-23 win to take a 2-0 lead. When the dust settled on the second set, the teams had battled through 12 ties and seven lead changes.

The Trailblazers quickly took control in the third set, jumping out to 17-11 lead. GCU countered with a 9-5 run to pull to within two points at 22-20, but a service error halted the 'Lopes rally. Dixie State took advantage of the miscue and slammed down back-to-back kills to claim a 25-20 set victory and the 3-0 sweep.

Megan Treanor led the way for the Trailblazers, tallying five kills in the second set and six more in third for a season-high 11 kills to go with six blocks and two service aces. Bridgett Talia added eight kills and three blocks and Hannah Howard finished with six kills. Jordyn Nelson finished just shy of a double-double with 18 assists and seven digs, while Hardy and Lizzy Clark each recorded six blocks.

Dixie State will close the weekend with a Saturday afternoon matchup against New Mexico State. The Aggies earned a 3-1 win over Utah Valley on Thursday. Opening serve between DSU and NMSU is set for 12 p.m.
