Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Megan Webb

MSOC stopped by CBU Lancers

Dixie State men's soccer saw its first loss of the 2021 season by a 2-0 score to the California Baptist University Lancers. CBU played a consistent press on DSU with a possession-focused game that the Trailblazers failed to break through.

HOW IT HAPPENED: From the opening whistle DSU found themselves struggling to possess the ball. The Lancers held control of the ball for the majority of the half.

The Trailblazers were able to make a few plays at the ball and tested CBU goalkeeper Gage Rogers just seven minutes into the game. Daniel Brubaker played a high press attack on the CBU backline and forced the defender into an error and although he didn't get a clean shot off, he was able to force Rogers off his line and put the Trailblazers into a dangerous position.

Just a few minutes later the Lancers found their first goal of the night and the Trailblazers were on the backfoot. The Trailblazers' attack didn't let up though and they got three more shots in the first half and just failed to find the back of the net.

CBU found their second goal just before the half.

Out of the halftime break, the Trailblazers just couldn't come back from the two goal deficit, but they played a much more even second half. Gian Gargurevich came alive in the second half. He had a lot of great looks on goal and brought a light to the Trailblazers attack that helped DSU register six second half shots.

Jimi Villasenor had the teams closest shot of the night, a rocket from 25 yards out that made the crossbar ring. Followed up shortly by a shot that went wide left from Tony Foulger, DSU easily could've found the back of the net in the 79' minute.

Ultimately despite the plentiful attack for the Trailblazers, CBU's goalkeepers stood on their heads and earned the shutout.

STAT BREAKDOWN: Goalkeeper Levi Lord had two saves in this one in his first appearance of the year for the Trailblazers.

Gian Gargurevich led the team in shots with three despite only seeing 48 minutes of play time. Daniel Brubaker and Tony Foulger each saw two apiece as well.

The Trailblazers registered shots from six different members of its team and 19 of the teams 31 members saw minutes, gaining meaningful experience in the early goings of this season.

NOTES TO KNOW: This was the first of two times the Trailblazers will face off with the Lancers in the 2021 season. The two teams will meet again on Oct. 16 in Riverside for a conference matchup. The last time these two teams played DSU saw a 5-0 loss, and tonight saw a 2-0 loss. With the improvement in the results the team will head to Riverside later in this year with a point to prove against the Lancers.

UP NEXT: The Trailblazers will now head on the road for the first of five road games against the University of California Berkeley. That game will be on Friday Sept. 3 at 1:00 PM PST. Following the Trailblazers five-game road stint, they will return home to start WAC conference play against Utah Valley University. That game will be Sept. 25 at 5 PM MST.
