Trailblazers Stopped by San Diego State in Series Finale Sunday

Dixie State dropped the final game of its three-game weekend series at San Diego State by a 9-1 count on Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Aztecs (22-9) struck for three runs in both the second and third stanzas off of DSU starter Ryan Hardman (L, 0-5) to open up a 6-0 lead. From there the SDSU offense would be held in check by freshman reliever Ben Hart, who limited the Aztecs to just two hits and struck out three in his three innings of work.

DSU (11-26), which was limited to one hit through the opening third of the game, managed to get base runners in each of its next three offensive frames, but could not break into the scoring column.

The Trailblazers finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh, though without benefit of a hit, as DSU loaded the bases thanks to three-straight walks, and would plate their first run on a two-out wild pitch. However that would all that Dixie State could muster as the Aztecs escaped the jam without further damage.

San Diego State would quell any thought of a late Blazer rally as the Aztecs answered with three runs in the home seventh and cruised on from there to complete the series sweep.

DSU finished with six hits with six different Blazers accounting for each knock.

Dixie State returns home for a big four-game WAC series against in-state foe Utah Valley next weekend, April 30-May 2, at Bruce Hurst Field. The set is part of the newly established "Old Hammer Rivalry" between the two former junior college rivals.
