Trailblazers battle in 8-6 loss to the Aggies



Dixie State battled with New Mexico State Saturday afternoon but fell 8-6 on senior day. 

How it happened: Dixie State got an early jump on New Mexico State in the first inning. The Trailblazers loaded up the bases and Shea Clements doubled off the left center fence for two RBIs. Kasey Crawford then drew a walk to load the bases back up. Emma Sweet then singled for an RBI before the inning closed. DSU had a 3-0 lead after the first. 

In the top of the third, NMSU was able to put up two runs to close the score gap. In the bottom of the third inning, Mikaela Thomson hit a solo shot into the left field palm trees to put DSU up 4-2 after three complete. 

The Aggies put one run up from one hit and two errors in the top of the fourth to cut the score deficit down. In the top of the fifth, NMSU put up five runs thanks in large part to a four run homer. 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Dixie was able to get one run. Kirsten Quigley started things off with a double. Hannah Hughbanks followed that up with a double for an RBI. As the sixth inning ended NMSU had an 8-5 lead. 

The seventh inning Clements started things off with a single. Crawford then doubled for an RBI to put the score at 8-6. DSU couldn't come up with any more runs and NMSU came away with the 8-6 victory. 

At the plate: Sweet and Clements led Dixie with two hits on the day. In total, DSU had six runs from 10 hits. The Trailblazers drew three walks and had three strikeouts. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts and 11 assists. Clements led with six while Meagan Anders and Sweet each had three assists. 

In the circle: Carissa Burgess started in the circle for DSU and pitched 4.1 innings. She gave up six hits and five runs. She also gave up two walks but came away with three strikeouts. 

Ashtyn Bauerle came in and pitched 2.2 innings and gave up eight hits, three runs and one walk. She did end the game with three strikeouts. 

Notes to know:  Dixie State is now 18-24 overall on the season and are now 6-9 in WAC action.

Up Next: DSU will finish the 2021 season on the road. First DSU will have a three game series at Seattle for the last WAC games of the year. Then, a double header at Utah State May 9 and the final game of the season at BYU May 10.
