Dixie drops two in doubleheader with NM State

Dixie State dropped both games in the double header with New Mexico State Friday afternoon.

GAME 1:
How it happened: New Mexico State wasted no time in showing they are one of the best teams in the WAC as they put up three runs in the top of the first inning.

Dixie didn't waste time in countering. Hannah Hughbanks started the bottom of the first with a double to center field. Malory Eldredge then came up with an RBI. With runners in scoring position Shea Clements smoked one up the middle for an RBI. As the first inning ended, DSU trailed 3-2.

In the top of the third the Aggies found some heat and put up five runs to push their lead 8-2 after three complete innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Eldredge started things off with a single. Mikaela Thomson was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Oaklee Trapp then doubled for and RBI. Clements followed that up with a single through the right side for another RBI and as the fifth inning closed, the Trailblazers trailed 8-4 to the Aggies.

Later in the bottom of the sixth, Kirsten Quigley singled through the right side. Hughbanks doubled to center field putting runners in scoring position. Meagan Anders then drew a walk to load up the bases. DSU wasn't able to capitalize on bases loaded and the sixth inning closed out with three runners stranded.

New Mexico State was able to get one run across in the top of the seventh and closed out the game for a 9-4 win over Dixie State.

At the plate: Clements led DSU going 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Hughbanks had two hits for DSU, both of them doubles. Dixie ended the game with four runs from 14 hits. DSU drew one walk and had four strikeouts.

In the bottom of the second, Clements hit a solo home run to tie the game up at 2-2 after two complete innings.

NMSU put up three runs in the top of the third to increase their lead to 5-2 after three innings. The Aggies kept the pressure on the Trailblazers putting up three more runs in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Kasey Crawford hit a solo home run to bring the score to 8-3.  In the bottom of the fifth, Dixie State loaded up the bases, Trapp singled to centerfield for an RBI. Bases still loaded and Clements hopped one over third base for another RBI.  With bases loaded and no outs, New Mexico State's shortstop, Jayleen Burton executed a triple play to kill the Trailblazers momentum and end the inning.
