Despite a couple of late chances to tie or take the lead, Dixie State came out of on the short end of a hard-fought 3-2 decision at in-state foe BYU on Tuesday night at Miller Field.
BYU (12-20) broke the seal on a scoreless game in bottom of the third when Mitch McIntyre cashed in a lead-off walk with his first home run of the season to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. BYU would also plate an unearned run in the home fourth to extend to a three-run cushion.
Dixie State (11-23), which was held to just one hit through its first four offensive frames, got its first real scoring chance in the fifth by loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk.
Jake Engel cashed in one of the base runners on a long fly out to center field to cut the deficit to 3-1. However the Blazers could only muster the one run as they stranded runners on the corners.
Trailing by the same 3-1 score in the DSU seventh, the Blazers drew consecutive lead off walks ahead of
Shane Taylor, drilled a one-out single to center drive in
Chase Rodriguez to pull to within a run at 3-2. Â
Dixie State had a chance to tie or take the lead in the eighth with runners on the corners and only one out.
Tanner Harper reached on a one-out single ahead of
Tanner Argyle, who hit a sharp ground ball that bounded away from BYU second baseman Andrew Pintar, which allowed pinch runner
Jagun Leavitt to race around to third.
However DSU could not capitalize on the miscue as Cougar reliever Bryce Robison struck out the next two Blazer hitters he faced to end the threat. The Trailblazers then got the lead off runner on in the ninth with a
Cade Spurlin pinch hit single, but BYU closer Reid McLaughlin got the final three outs to end the game.Â
DSU finished with six hits on the day, with Taylor and Harper collecting two hits apiece, however the Trailblazers stranded 10 baserunners, including five over the final three innings. Meanwhile, eight Blazer pitchers combined to limit BYU to just three runs and nine hits, and held the Cougars scoreless from the fifth inning on.
Dixie State will now head to southern California for a quick three-game series at San Diego State this Saturday and Sunday.
