Trailblazers bounce back with win against Chicago State

The Dixie State women's tennis team bounced back from Thursday's loss with a win over Chicago State on Friday, defeating the Cougars 5-2 in Edinburg, Texas.

Dixie State (4-13, 2-2 WAC) started the day off by claiming the doubles point with a win at No. 2 doubles and a default win at No. 3 doubles. Juliana Honczaruk and Rachel Mellor played to a 6-2 win for their second doubles win of the weekend.

"Great win at number two doubles to secure the doubles point," said Head Coach Eric Pelton.

The Trailblazers started singles play where they left off, claiming the No. 3,5, and 6 spots from the Cougars. Honczaruk played to her second win of the weekend in No. 5 singles, winning her first set 6-1 and her second 6-4. Sabrina Longson also took her match, defeating the Cougars No. 3 player 6-4 in the first set and 6-2 in the second. Chicago State (3-10, 1-3 WAC) was able to pull out two wins at No. 1 and 4 singles, but it would not be enough. The Trailblazers gained a thrilling win from Alexandra Hildreth at No. 2 singles and a default win at No. 6 singles to clinch the 5-2 victory.

"It was so great to see the girls out there competing so hard and fighting for every point to earn our second [WAC] win," added Coach Pelton.

The Trailblazers will come home for their last home match of the season against Weber State on April 9 at 2 p.m. They will then head to Las Cruces, New Mexico on April 16 for two conference matches against Tarleton State and UT Rio Grande Valley to close out their first Division I season.
