Dixie State comes back for 4-2 win over GCU

Dixie State came from behind to take a 4-2 win over Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon.

What Head Coach Randy Simkins said: "Huge series win for our program! GCU is a very good team that is very well coached. For us to come down and win two of three is big.  It proves that we can win big games on the road in our conference."

How it happened: The first three innings went scoreless for both teams. In the bottom of the fourth, Grand Canyon got on the board first with one run from two hits. The Lopes followed that up with a single run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead after five complete innings.

In the top of the sixth inning, Oaklee Trapp drew a walk to start things off. Malory Eldredge singled to put two runners on base. Kasey Crawford then doubled for two RBIs to tie the game at 2-2.

Dixie State put up two runs in the top of the seventh inning thanks to a two run homer by Mikaela Thomson. With a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, the Trailblazers locked down on defense picking up three outs in three batters to end the game in favor of Dixie.

At the plate: Dixie State was led by Hannah Hughbanks who went 2-2 at the plate with one run. Malory Eldredge went 2-4 at the plate with one run.

In total, DSU had four runs from seven hits. The Trailblazers had one double and one home run while drawing seven walks.

In the circle:  Carissa Burgess started in the circle for DSU and pitched the complete seven inning game. She gave up six hits, two runs and just one walk. She had one strikeout.

Next Up: Dixie State is now 17-19 overall on the season and 5-4 in WAC action. Dixie State will stay on the road April 16-17 to take on Utah Valley before returning to Karl Books Field for the final home games of the season against New Mexico State April 23-24.
