Dixie State splits double header with Utah Valley

Dixie State split a double header with Utah Valley Saturday afternoon. First Dixie State fell 4-1 but came back with a vengeance in game two to take a 15-4 victory in five innings. 

GAME 1:
How it happened: The first two innings went scoreless for both teams. Dixie State got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Hannah Hughbanks started things off with a double to left field. Meagan Anders followed that up with a double, also to left field, for an RBI. 

In the bottom of the third, the Wolverines capitalized on some Trailblazer errors to put up four runs to take a 4-1 lead. The remainder of the game went scoreless for both teams and Utah Valley claimed the 4-1 win over Dixie State. 

At the plate: Dixie State was led by Meagan Anders who went 2-2 at the plate with one RBI and one double. In total DSU ended the game with one run from four hits. The Blazers drew two walks and had four strikeouts. 

In the field: Dixie State had 18 putouts and nine assists. Shea Clements led with six putouts while Kirsten Quigley had six assists. 

In the circle:  Carissa Burgess pitched the complete six innings and gave up seven hits and four runs. She had four walks but had an impressive six strikeouts in the 29 batters faced. 

GAME TWO -
How it happened:
  In the top of the third inning, Dixie State loaded up the bases. Anders sent a shot down the first base line that scored two runs to put the Trailblazers on the board first with a 2-0 lead.  Mikaela Thomson then rocketed one up the middle for a single to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Clements drew a walk to score another run. With bases loaded, Kasey Crawford sent one deep over the left center fence for a grand slam. Later in the inning Hannah Hughbanks bounced one off the wall for an RBI. Before the top of the inning came to a close Dixie State had a 9-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the third, Utah Valley couldn't gain much traction but was able to score one run from one hit. UVU then put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Going into the fifth inning, Dixie State had a 9-3 lead. 

In the top of the fifth inning, Quigley drew a walk to get on base for Hughbanks who homered over left field to push Dixie State's lead to 11-3. Later in the inning, Clements singled down the left field line and for an RBI. Dixie kept pushing and ended the fifth by putting up six runs from five hits to take a 15-3 lead.  UVU was able to sneak one run across in the bottom of the fifth but couldn't prevail and the Blazers claimed the 15-4 win. 

At the plate: Clements went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Hughbanks ended the game going 2-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and one home run. The Trailblazers ended with 15 runs from 11 hits. 

In the circle: Ashtyn Bauerle started in the circle and pitched all five innings. She gave up seven hits and four runs and had one strikeout.  

Notes to know:  Dixie State is now 18-20 overall on the season and are now 6-5 in WAC action.

Up Next: DSU will take on Utah Valley in the final game of the three game series tomorrow before returning to Karl Brooks Field for the final home games of the season. Dixie will celebrate senior day on April 24 during the New Mexico State series.
