Trailblazers Blitzed by USC on Saturday

Dixie State came out on the short end of a 10-3 decision at USC on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.

In what turned out to be a carbon copy of Friday's series opener, the Trailblazers found themselves facing an early deficit again on Saturday as the Trojans (14-11) struck for seven runs in their first two offensive frames to bolt a quick lead. Five of the seven runs came off the bat of Jamal O'Guinn, who drilled a three-run first inning homer, and doubled in two more runs in the Trojan second.

In all, USC scored all 10 runs in each of its first four innings, while the Blazer bats were held in check as USC starter Chandler Champlain (W, 2-2), who held Dixie State to just three hits over his six scoreless innings.

Dixie State (9-19) finally broke through in the scoring column with three runs in the seventh off the Trojan bullpen. Jake Engel and Lane Pritchard both singled to lead off the stanza ahead of Chase Rodriguez, who laced a double to right field to plate both base runners. Rodriguez was then chased home two batters later by a Tanner Argyle hit that cut the deficit to 10-3.

However that would be as close at the Blazers could draw as the USC pen limited DSU to three singles the rest of the way. DSU finished with 11 hits on the day, including a 3-for-4 effort from Pritchard, while Argyle collected two safeties.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (PT).
