The Trailblazer women's tennis team dropped a close match to New Mexico State on Thursday morning, falling 4-3 in Edinburg, Texas.
Dixie State (4-12, 1-2 WAC) started the match strong by winning two out of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day.
Juliana Honczaruk and
Rachel Mellor took a 7-5 win in No. 2 doubles, while
Alexandra Hildreth and
Ya-Chi Hsu played to a 6-4 win in No. 3 doubles.
New Mexico State (4-9, 3-0 WAC) got off to a quick start in singles play, claiming the No. 3, 4, and 5 spots from the Blazers, giving them a 3-1 advantage. Honczaruk then won her match in No. 6 singles, dominating both sets with a score of 6-1 in both.
Kyra Harames also won her match in No. 1 singles, playing to a 6-3 win in the first set, and a 5-7 loss in the second. The senior would then pull out the third set in dramatic fashion, clinching the match with a 10-8 win. The Trailblazers came up short of a victory, but were able to battle with one of the top teams in the Western Athletic Conference.
"The girls came out strong in doubles," said Head Coach
Eric Pelton. "We got great wins at number one and six singles as well. It was great to be able to really push one of the top teams in the [WAC]."
The Trailblazers will be back in action on Friday, April 2 in Edinburg, Texas where they will take on WAC foe, Chicago State.
