Dixie State bounces back with 7-5 win over CBU

Dixie State bounced back with a 7-5 win over California Baptist Saturday afternoon after dropping a double header yesterday.

What head coach Randy Simkins said: "We responded very well today after a disappointing day yesterday.  We came out swinging in the first inning and set a much better tone for the day. We talked about winning small chunks of the game (winning at bats & winning innings) to put ourselves in a much better position to win today and I was very happy with how we did that.  Clutch hitting and three double plays defensively were keys to us getting past CBU today."

How it happened: Dixie State wasted no time getting on the board. In the first inning on a two out rally, Malory Eldredge started things off with a single to left field. With two outs, Mikaela Thomson hit a two run shot deep over the center field fence to get the Blazers on the board with an early 2-0 lead. Oaklee Trapp and Shea Clements each came up with singles to put a runner in scoring position. Kasey Crawford then singled to right field for an RBI giving DSU a 3-0 lead.

Dixie held CBU scoreless for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth the Lancers strung together a two hits and capitalized on a DSU error to put two runs up. However, in the bottom of the fourth the Blazers answered with three runs. Hannah Hughbanks started things off drawing a walk. Meagan Anders then bounced one off the scoreboard in right field for a two run shot.

Later in the fourth, Clements hit the ball hard through the left side for an RBI to give the Trailblazers a 6-2 lead after four complete innings. California Baptist put up one run in the fifth, and sixth innings to cut Dixie's lead to 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Anders started with a double down the left field line. Eldredge then singled up the middle. Trapp followed in suit with a single up the middle for an RBI. Dixie State had a 7-4 lead heading into the final inning.

CBU was able to sneak one run across in the top of the seventh before the Trailblazers locked it down to get three outs and end the game with a final score of 7-5.

At the plate: Anders led Dixie State going 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs one double and one home run. Trapp also had a good day at the plate going 3-4 with one RBI and one run. In total, the Trailblazers had 13 hits, seven runs, seven RBIs, two doubles and two homeruns on the day.

In the field: Dixie State had 21 putouts and 14 assists. Thomson had nine putouts for the game high while Anders had seven assists. DSU ended the game with three errors.

In the circle:  Carissa Burgess started in the circle for Dixie and pitched five innings. She gave up four runs and six hits. She had three walks and three strikeouts in the 24 batters faced. She now has a 10-8 record on the season.

Kate Dolinski came in and closed out the game pitching two innings. She gave up three hits and one run in the eight batters faced.
